EU GMO proposals draw widespread criticism
EU member states will be able to ban GMO cultivation on their territory under new proposals tabled yesterday (13 July), but will need the EU institutions' approval to act if their decision is not based on scientific evidence. The European Commission adopted a "package" of proposals overhauling the EU policy on GM crop cultivation, hoping to draw a line under years of controversy regarding GMO approvals.

EU Anti-Counterfeiting Legislation On Its Way
With the increasing financial and technical means of counterfeiters, the number of counterfeit pharmaceuticals in the supply chain is growing at an alarming rate. Counterfeiters now have the ability to produce higher quality packages, which enables fake medicines to slip into supply chains more easily. To combat this threat, the European Parliament and the Council of the EU are amending the current anti-counterfeiting directive (Directive 2001/83/EC), which is due to be completed before the end of 2010, to include a requirement for features that enable the identification, authentication and traceability of prescription medicines.

Government Investment in R&D May Boost German Biopharma Innovation
A proposal from the German ministry of research to fund interdisciplinary health care and disease research centres could be a boon for the European biopharmaceutical industry, according to the German pharmaceutical industry association VFA. The German government's Hightech-Strategy 2020 document, published July 14 in Berlin, includes proposals designed to adapt German industry to the changing global environment, foster ties between industry and academia, and give a boost to competitiveness and innovation in the pharmaceutical sector.

Progress on a Single EU Patent Expected by Year End
The decade-long struggle to have one "EU" patent, valid in all EU countries after a single filing in one language, has moved a small step forward. The European Commission is proposing that only one of three official languages should be used in EU patent filings, instead of inventors paying for patents to be translated into each language spoken in all the EU countries. Such a system would benefit inventors, including biotech and pharmaceutical companies who face language and bureaucratic obstacles to gaining patent protection in the EU. The proposals, if implemented, would markedly reduce the cost and complexity of filing EU patents.
