Brussels Day Event
Brussels
Day is an annual national outreach event
where key CEOs of successful biotechnology
companies from across Europe meet with
national representatives from Permanent
Representations and the European Parliament
in Europes capital. This year, it took place
in the Renaissance Hotel on 1-2 December
2009 and aimed to discuss how Europe can
boost innovation and increase investment in
research in an economic downturn. Over 11
national delegations were present for this
event. From amongst them, we interviewed SME
CEOs: Maria Luisa Nolli, Jozsef Repasi and
Paul McBaron.

Innovation: The Key to Delivering on
Copenhagen Commitments:

The magazine is
distributed directly to
all Members of the European Parliament,
senior members of the Commission and
various EU institutions.
The hard copy has a
distribution of 3000 with an estimated
readership of 10.000. Additionally, the
magazine newsletter of the digital
magazine is distributed to 17,000
contacts. Hard copies
will also be distributed at the EU
Spanish Presidency welcome reception
which will take place in European
Parliament on Tuesday 26th
January.

BECOTEPS project advertised in The
Parliament Magasine
One of the main results of the BECOTEPS
project is the development of a white paper on the
bioeconomy, including several recommendations on how to
develop and strengthen this sector in at European level
and in Member States.

Gene rice on its way in China
Genetically modified rice cleared for commercial sale
could be growing on Chinese farms as early as next year,
making China the first country to allow commercial
cultivation of GM strains. The field trials required for
any new variety are now under way, following official
safety clearance November.

Are booming bioplastics here to stay?
As world leaders and their delegates trod the carpet
thin at the United Nations climate summit in Copenhagen
last week, one environmental solution to reduce
greenhouse gas emissions was literally under their feet.
The 215,000-square-feet carpet at the Bella Center that
hosted most of the U.N.'s official events was made using Ingeo, a bio-fibre derived from corn sugars.

to face global food and climate challenges, but left
aside divisive budgetary issues for future talks.
