EuropaBio congratulates European
Parliament on Advanced Therapies Regulation
The European Parliament voted, in a land mark vote,
for an EU Regulation on Advanced Therapies that if
adopted by the Council, will pave the way for truly
innovative, safe regenerative medicines for patients
and for a regulatory framework that offers certainty
and predictability for Europe’s biotechnology-based
companies. EuropaBio has made significant
contributions to this process and warmly welcomes
this first step in the right direction.

European Commission releases a
Communication on the Mid-Term Policy Review
Last month, the
EU
Commission issued a Communication on biotechnology – the
Mid-Term Policy Review of the EU's Life Science and
Biotechnology Strategy. The Review assesses what needs
to change in the strategy, what new policies are
required, what has worked and what has not worked so
well in developing the biotechnology environment in
Europe.

The Joint
Research Council's BIO4EU Study
In
April, the EU published the Bio4EU study “Consequences,
opportunities and challenges of modern biotechnology”
which was carried out by the Joint Research Centre (the
Research Centre of the European Commission).
The landmark study gives extensive facts and figures of the
biotech industry in Europe.

Match2Bio website launched
Match2BioSME is a European FP6 initiative
with the mission to stimulate innovation in the European
biotechnology industry by matching activities of small-
and medium sized companies (SMEs) with academic
institutions.

Party of European Socialists support white biotechnology
The Party of European
Socialists (PES) invited
EuropaBio
and industry representatives to an
event on eco-innovation in March to discuss
input into an internal discussion process on smart,
green growth strategy and ecological industrial policy.
The meeting revealed the support that white
biotech has from the PES.

EP Plenary sends organic production regulation back to
Committee
The accidental presence of GMOs in
organic food, which the Commission & Council both
believe should be set at 0.9%, as is the case with
conventional food & feed, MEPs backed a 0.1% threshold
leading to a deadlock on the regulation.

GM
seeds
authorised for import
and processing in animal feed
In March the Commission authorised the placing on the market of three
varieties of
GM oilseed rape. In publishing its decision,
the Commission also published an updated information package
on GM regulation in the EU.

EU Parliament calls for an end to 'dormant'
patents
MEPs voted in committee in April to call on the
European Commission and member states to develop a procedure
for the abolition of 'dormant patents'. This report, due to
be adopted in plenary on 25 May, will be the EU Parliament's
response to the innovation strategy presented by the
Commission in September 2006. On patents, the EU executive
is also called on to examine possibilities to provide small
businesses with financial support to help with their patent
applications.

Public Consultation on
the
draft guidelines for clinical trials on
high-risk medicinal products
The European Medicines Agency’s Committee for
Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) has
adopted a draft guideline on requirements for
first-in-man clinical trials for potential
high-risk medicinal products.
The draft guideline is being released for a
two-month public-consultation period.
Comments are
invited for final submission by 23 May 2007.
