Commissioner Mandelson
speaks out on trade and biotechnology

science-based health and safety testing but which

EuropaBio elects new chairman
At its Annual General Assembly in Brussels, EuropaBio
members elected Steen Riisgaard, President and CEO, Novozymes
A/S to chair the association for the next two years, he
succeeds Hans Kast, President and CEO, BASF Plant Science
Holding AG.

Launch of YIC Status website
EuropaBio has launched a website for the project "Realisation
of Young Innovative Company Status, YIC, for biotech
companies". EuropaBio is a partner in this 6th EU

Adventitious Presence of 0.9% in organic foods approved by EU
Council of Ministers
The organic labelling regulation approved by the Council of
Ministers did not take on board the European Parliament’s
position of lowering the adventitious presence threshold for the labelling of GM
traces in
ingredients to 0.1% in organic foods and maintains the standard
0.9% threshold used for the labelling of conventional foods.

A threat to EU
biofuels?
More than 30 groups from around the world have come together
to demand a moratorium on the EU's move towards sourcing
biofuels from large-scale monocultures. Presenting their
case at the European Parliament on 26 and 27 June, the
signatories warn that producing biofuels for EU markets will
accelerate climate change, destroy biodiversity, and uproot
local communities.

Risk Sharing
Finance Facility
To tackle the market failure and improve access to loans for
R&D projects, the Community has proposed the Risk-Sharing
Finance Facility. Its consists of a contribution from the
European 7th Research Framework Programme to the European
Investment Bank. More precisely, the RSFF aims to improve
access to the EIB debt finance for participants of large
scale European R&D projects.

Report published
The Vademecum report provides a concise overview of the basic EU

ECJ rules against Austria's GM Ban
On 18/05, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) Advocate General
(AG) issued a preliminary ruling stating that Upper Austria’s
blanket ban on the cultivation of genetically-modified crops is
not justified and therefore illegal. For more information on the

‘Plants for the Future’ invites
Europe to reap fruits of knowledge-based bio-economy
The EU-backed ‘Plants for the Future’ Technology Platform
officially released its full and final Strategic Research Agenda
(SRA) at a lunch hosted by MEPs Giles Chichester and John Purvis
in the European Parliament in Brussels. The document backed by
scientists, farmers and industry and other public and private
stakeholders signposts a route for Europe to use plant sciences
and biotechnology to enhance EU competitiveness and welfare.

Launch of ERA-Net
website
The website of the ERA-NET Industrial Biotechnology is now
operational. In ERA-NET, "Towards an ERA in Industrial
Biotechnology", partners from 12 different countries join forces
to reduce fragmentation of national research efforts in the area
of Industrial Biotechnology.

Ethanol-based plastics from Brazil
Brazilian chemical company Braskem SA said Thursday it has
produced the world's first polyethylene plastic made entirely of
renewable raw materials in a bid to develop "green" plastic for
commercial markets. Chief Executive Jose Carlos Grubisich said
the plastic is the same as existing petroleum-based products and
could potentially be used in a wide range of household goods.
