The
biofuels “war of words” heated up – in one instance a study
released by a committee of MPs which called for the EU to
abandon its biofuels targets “because they are damaging the
environment” was soundly rejected by the European Commission
and Commissioner Piebalgs.

EuropaBio supports
EUnetHTA's proposal for collaboration with stakeholders 2009+
The European network for Health Technology Assessment (EUnetHTA)
coordinates the efforts of 27 European countries - including
24 EU Member States - in evaluating health technology in
Europe, co-financed by DG Sanco and contributions from
network members. Consultation on a proposal for a more
formal European HTA Collaboration (2009+) was recently
undertaken. EuropaBio
strongly supported the goal of developing a sustainable
collaboration to advocate and facilitate robust, transparent
and predictable HTA analysis across Europe, while continuing
to advocate the 6 principles we believe should form the
basis of a common European standard for HTA.

Commissioner Fischer Boel addresses need to get approval
system moving for GM crops
Excerpted: “I'm certainly not arguing that
we should authorise imports of GM products which science has
told us to reject. But where science has given a product a
clean bill of health, that fact must be paramount as we
follow the authorisation procedure.”
“If we show a lack of faith in procedures which we ourselves
reformed only a few years ago after a long debate, we
undermine our credibility and we load burdens onto the
European feed and food sectors.”
“Therefore, the European Union urgently needs to get its
approvals system moving more quickly and more smoothly. I
realize it is politically an extremely sensitive issue."

US
Trade Representative urges EU to hasten biotech approvals
reports Reuters
U.S.
Trade Representative Susan Schwab has pledged to watch for
proof that the European Union is accelerating approval of
new biotech products and ending a delay that has been costly
to U.S. exporters. If
patience runs out in the Bush administration, trade
officials might ask the WTO to convene a compliance panel
that would decide whether the EU has done enough to comply
with the ruling or not. That process could ultimately lead
to trade retaliation. Click
