EuropaBio champions SMEs at the DIA
EuropaBio championed the innovative role that Small and
Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) have the potential to play
in the European economy at the Drug Information
Association’s 20th EuroMeeting 3-5 March in
Barcelona. Academics, policy makers and industry
representatives attended the session “If the Future of
Treatment Is in the Hands Of SMEs, How Can We Unlock Their
Potential?”. EuropaBio’s Secretary General, Dr. Johan
Vanhemelrijck spoke on “What Needs Joining Up in Europe to

FT says rising food costs may pressure governments to review
their opposition to genetically modified crops
“The FAO hopes to encourage a co-ordinated policy response
in the second half of the year, at least as regards the
impact of biofuels and climate change. It has convened a
high-level conference in Rome in June, which would bring
together policymakers in the area. “Agriculture is back into
the political agenda,” says Alexander Mueller, assistant
director-general at the FAO in Rome. “We want to take the
triangle of food security, biofuel and climate together

Sensor system detects airborne bioterror agents
Innovative Biosensors is marketing a new sensor system that
can identify six airborne bioterror agents, including
anthrax, within three minutes. The mouse immune system cells
used in the device are genetically engineered to emit light

The
1st European Day on Rare Diseases was celebrated on 29
February
29 February, was chosen to celebrate the First European
Awareness Day on Rare Diseases. This “rare” date was
selected as an appropriate day to recognise the rare disease
community in Europe. It was organised on the initiative of
EURORDIS (the European Organisation on Rare Diseases) which
brings together more than 310 rare disease associations in
34 different countries representing millions of patients.
