Member States Refuse to Lift Illegal Bans on GM Products
The EU Environment Council voted against all

Commission
may unveil special Young Innovative Company (YIC) definition
soon
A new definition would mean that young research
based companies like biotech firms that meet this new definition
could qualify for special tax exemptions or special services.
EuropaBio has lobbied hard to obtain an EU-wide YIC-definition;
rumours are that Commission plans to publish the proposal for
consultation at the end of next month.

EU research budget threatened
After the June summit failed to reach agreement
on the overall budget for the EU for the next 7 years – no money
can be allocated to any of the Union’s policies. That means that
the Commission’s proposed EUR 70 billion for research is not
certain to be agreed, in fact the Luxembourg presidency proposed
a cut of 30% to try to get a last minute agreement. We have
everything to fight for and must continue to put pressure on
member states so that they do not sacrifice research in order to
maintain other forms of aid.

A Special Effort to Support Research Intensive
SMEs in Health/Biotechnology Sectors – 4th call SMEs
A special effort to stimulate the participation
of small and medium-sized enterprises1, SMEs, in Thematic
Priority 1 in the 4th call for proposals is done by introducing
the Specific Targeted Research Projects (STREPs) dedicated to
SMEs,“SME-STREPs”.
