GM Crops – The elephant in the room? Sustainable agriculture
still low down on EU climate change agenda
GM crops
can and already do play an important role in reducing the
negative environmental impacts of agriculture and feeding a
growing population in a worsening climate, reveals a report
published today by EuropaBio. Furthermore, this contribution
will only increase as their cultivation becomes even more
widely adopted around the world. Nevertheless, this fact
continues to be ignored by many EU regulators, as is
evidenced by its repeated non-appearance on DG Environment’s
Green Week agenda.

EuropaBio Press release:
EU leaders commit to more action on Rare Diseases:
“Europe and its rare disease patients will benefit,” say
stakeholders

signed up to a series of political commitments on behalf of
Europe’s rare disease patients, by adopting a Council

creating a rare disease action plan at national level and to
cooperating at a European level on this important and unmet
public health priority.

Food and
fuel not food versus fuel is the way forward - EU policy makers
must change the debate
Speaking at
the fifth International Conference on Renewable Resources &
Biorefineries (1) in Ghent, Belgium, EuropaBio’s Secretary
General Willy De Greef addressed the potential for agriculture
to deliver food, feed and raw materials in an enabling policy
environment. Food security comes first but better agricultural
policies can easily deliver both food and fuel.

Agriculture
seen as 'key' to fighting climate change (the summary of the report is available
here)
Agriculture
and land management have not received enough attention from
scientists and politicians, while a number of innovations in
food production and land use could be implemented to fight
global warming, argues a new report published last week by the
Worldwatch Institute, a think-tank
