EuropaBio lobbies FP7 actors
The EU's Seventh Framework Programme for Research and
Development was debated by EU Industry and Research Ministers at
the Competitiveness Council in Brussels on November 28-29 where
The Council approved, by a large majority, the non budgetary
elements of the 7th Framework Programmes (FP7) for research and
technological development and focussed on giving “the adequate
support for small and medium-sized enterprises participation in
research projects”. This paves the way for future discussions
on budget and how the money should be spent. Still a long way
to go…12th of October the EU Commission announced a
major cut down on red tape for EU contracts and grants and
promised to simplify significantly the administrative burden for
companies, SMEs and beneficiaries of EU grants.

Concerns raised over impact of clinical trials directive
Concerns have been expressed at the 13th European Cancer
Conference in Paris that the recently introduced EU clinical
trials Directive is having a restrictive effect on the number of
new cancer trials being carried out in Europe. The aims of the
Directive - to harmonise legal provisions for the establishment,
conduct and reporting of clinical trials, implement good
clinical practice and ensure patient safety - are noble,
according to a statement by the Federation of European Cancer
Societies (FECS).

EuropaBio feedback from Environment Council public debate on
GMOs
EuropaBio prepared briefing paper on benefits of biotech crop
production for National Associations and member companies.
The
debate was
rather negative and was centered
around the need in their view to to
review the decision-making procedure for approving GMOs, particularly
comitology rules, as well as the need to conduct more research
and provide the public with more information on
genetically-modified organisms, There are several reports due
and that these were needed to feed into more serious policy
discussions which would have to wait until Spring, under the
Austrian Presidency.
Events coming up:
- Coexistence Conference in Vienna, April 4th, 2006
- Commission to publish report on coexistence - February 2006
- Report on Review of 2001/18 due end 2006
- Report on Traceability and labelling to be released beginning
2006
- WTO verdict expected January 2006
