EuropaBio’s campaign to
deliver quality
information to patients
EuropaBio believes that
more and better
information to patients
will contribute to
improved health outcomes
for citizens, optimising
the management of
healthcare budgets,
which in turn will have
a positive impact on the
European economy and
promote the EU’s
competitiveness agenda.
The EU Commission is in
the process of
making amendments to the Directive
on Pharmaceuticals
concerning Information
to Patients, which is
why now is such a
crucial time to get
messages out on this
issue.
Why
is information to
patients important for biotech
treatments?
EuropaBio has 5 key
steps to facilitate the
availability of quality
information on biotech
treatments for
patients:
-
There needs to be
legislative change
at the EU level to
accommodate a new
and harmonised
framework for
communicating of the
benefits of biotech
treatments.
-
We support the
finding of a
workable distinction
between information
and advertising, and
firmly reject the
use of any
direct-to-consumer
marketing of
medicines.
-
We believe that
“advertising” should
be limited to mean
promotional
unsolicited and
direct communication
by the industry on a
specific
prescription
medicine.
-
We believe that
“information” should
include objective
and unbiased,
patient-oriented,
evidence-based,
up-to-date,
accessible,
transparent,
relevant and
reliable information
to patients on
available medicines
from all pertinent
sources, including
the bio-healthcare
industry.
-
Rather than creating
a regulatory board
that includes
national
authorities,
regulatory oversight
should be carried
out by EuropaBio
through a system in
which its members
would adhere to
strict quality
standards consistent
with those outlined
by the Commission,
and enforced by the
trade association
through a process
that would involve
outside, independent
stakeholders. The
Swedish industry
association has for
many years
successfully used
this approach in the
provision of
information to
Swedish citizens.
Such a system would minimise unnecessary
and excessive
bureaucracy

our campaign, to learn
