Crop science: Global food debate presents opportunity

“Global food security ultimately depends on growing enough crops,” comments Professor Janet Allen, director of research at the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), the UK’s funding agency for biosciences.  But the author notes, “even if global food production can keep pace with population growth – and that is a big if – it is unlikely to be enough to accommodate serious weather-related disruptions in supply.” As Professor Sir John Beddington, the UK’s chief scientific advisor commented on the UK government’s report, The Future of Food and Farming, earlier this year: “There will be no silver bullet, but it is very hard to see how it would be remotely sensible to justify not using new technologies such as GM.”
