NRP 59 Final Report: Green gene technology in Switzerland

30.08.2012

On 28 August 2012, the Swiss national research programme (NFP 59) published a report entitled ‘Benefits and Risks from the Deliberate Release of Genetically Modified Plants’, which concluded that there is “no evidence for health or environmental harms posed by green gene technology”.

The benefits of the technology were also highlighted by the authors:  “the use of Bt maize can have positive health effects. It can lead toless contamination of food and feedstuffs by neuro toxic or cancerogenous mycotoxins”. On the question of public acceptance, the report underlines that 71% of Swiss consumers want free choice when it comes to buying GM versus non-GM food. These results may reopen the debate on the existing moratorium in Switzerland and the arguments used to justify its extension.
