The EU’s approval process for biotechnology derived crops- Letter addressed to Mr. José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission

Re: The EU’s approval process for biotechnology derived crops

Dear President Barroso,

We are writing to you to express our concern over the continued delay in the proper implementation of the EU’s regulatory approval process for the products of agricultural biotechnology. We understand that the College of Commissioners will discuss this on 12 April and we consider it most important that you are aware of our views and concerns.

Currently for companies, the approval process is unpredictable and unreliable. Furthermore, we are concerned that the Commission may now consider abandoning its established policy by rejecting products – that have received a positive safety assessment from the EU’s independent EFSA – even when there is no qualified majority against their approval. In this respect we would point to the negative voting of a number of the Member States that is clearly not science based but is political – a most unsatisfactory situation given the past 7 years of EU Co-decision legislation development that has set in place rigorous safety based approval rules, and that has mandated a labelling scheme to provide EU consumers with choice.
