Join Europabio

EuropaBio, the European Association for Bioindustries, was created in 1996 and represents 81 corporate members operating worldwide, 5 associate members, 6 BioRegions and 25 national biotechnology associations. Through our national associations EuropaBio is also the voice of over 1800 small and medium-sized enterprises involved in research, development, testing, manufacturing and commercialisation of biotechnology applications.

Our corporate members are involved in a wide range of activities: human and animal healthcare, diagnostics, bio-informatics, chemicals, crop protection, agriculture, food and environmental products and services. EuropaBio also welcomes associate members such as international commercial, financial, asset management and other service-providing companies, regional biotechnology development organisations and scientific institutes. The common denominator among all our members is the use of biotechnology at any stage of research, development or manufacturing.

Mission

EuropaBio's mission is to promote an innovative and dynamic biotechnology-based industry in Europe.

We advocate free and open markets and the removal of barriers to competitiveness with other areas of the world.

We are committed to an open, informed dialogue with all stakeholders about the ethical, social and economic aspects of biotechnology and its applications.

We champion the responsible use of biotechnology to ensure that its potential is fully used to the benefit of people and their environment. We pay particular importance to the interest of our entrepreneurial members, whose success will determine the future of biotechnology in the EU.

For their benefit, and among other initiatives, we organise, co-organise support events which bring together entrepreneurs and capital providers, so as to help start-up companies cross the early stages of their development.

What we do

EuropaBio is the voice of the European Biotechnology Industry.

Our membership includes a wide range of corporate members and industry associations involved in biotechnology throughout Europe.

EuropaBio's primary focus is the European Union, but, due to the global character of the business, we also represent our members in transatlantic and worldwide fora.

We are actively engaged in dialogue with the European institutions and contribute to the creation of a coherent legislation for bioindustries. EuropaBio ensures a steady flow of information about biotechnology to the European Parliament, the European Commission and the Council of Ministers.

Through our member associations, EuropaBio fosters a standing dialogue with policy makers and stakeholders at a national level and cooperates with Member State governments, in particular as they prepare for an EU Presidency term.

We lead an innovative and dynamic industry, helping our members find continuing success and opportunities.

Code of Conduct

EuropaBio’s members have set up the BioEthics Working Group, which follows the ethical aspects of biotechnology and its applications. The members of this group develop information materials on the ethical aspects of biotech applications and the industry position relating to them. Europe needs to achieve a common understanding on life sciences and biotechnology among all stakeholders and policy makers and resolve any diverging views Europe is currently facing.

All EuropaBio members are bound by EuropaBio’s Core Ethical Values and Code of Conduct.

How we are organised

Sector Councils and Working Groups

EuropaBio has a board of management made up of representatives from among our members. They are assisted by sector councils representing the main segments of EuropaBio - healthcare (red biotech), agriculture (green biotech), industrial (white biotech) and emerging enterprises. In addition, interaction and coordination between national associations is promoted by a national associations council.

Experts from member companies and national associations actively participate in EuropaBio's working groups which cover a wide range of issues and areas of concern to our membershipEach working group, task force or committee is chaired by a representative of a member or association and is coordinated by a EuropaBio staff member.  The active participation of staff from member companies and associations, the input of their know-how and expertise have resulted in a lean and pro-active organization.

Broken down into sectors and sector-specific working groups, the following is a short description of our structure and ongoing campaigns.

Healthcare Council

The council’s members are representatives of companies and national associations involved in healthcare applications of biotechnology. The Healthcare Council oversees specific working groups on a diverse range of healthcare biotech issues.

Green Biotechnology Europe (GBE) – Agri-Food Council

The Agri-Food Council is made up of representatives of companies and national associations with an interest in plant biotechnology applications. It sets priorities for EuropaBio’s working groups within the Green Biotechnology Europe unit of EuropaBio. The Green Biotechnology Europe unit, also known as GBE, is composed of a Management Committee and 3 Operating Committees. A number of cross-cutting temporary task forces and fixed working groups deal with individual priority issues bringing in expertise from the three operating committees where necessary. The GBE unit is active in policy development and advocacy in the political arena at EU and Member State level.
