The Control of Infectious
Diseases: Virulence, Antibiotics and Bacterial Infection |
|
Reference: |
Infectious diseases account worldwide for more than 13 million
deaths a year. The WHO has stated that 'no population is more
vulnerable to multi-drug resistance than those admitted to hospital
wards'. The rapid spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria means that
there are major problems with the diagnosis, treatment and
prevention of bacterial infections and medical procedures once
previously taken for granted may have to be abandoned. This
symposium is designed to examine the current state of knowledge of
bacterial virulence and infection, the evolution of antibiotic
resistance and the strategies being developed to tackle the threats
posed by the emergence of hypervirulent, multi-antibiotic resistant
bacteria.
