Plant Biotechnology Has Growth Potential
in Europe
Brussels, 30 June 2003
Three recently researched, and just published, case studies by the
National Center for Food and Agricultural Policy (NCFAP) documents
that crops developed through biotechnology can help farmers reap
an additional 7.8 billion kilograms of food, improve farm income
by over € 1 billion, and save 9.7 million kilograms of pesticide.
Such results show that there are a number of agricultural policy
options open to the EU. For example, with increases in yields, an
area the size of Luxembourg could be removed from agricultural production
altogether and set aside as wild habitats or used for other purposes.
