The European Commission has launched a new €6.2 million (£5.35m) three-year project aimed at helping UK SMEs to develop bio-based technologies, it was announced today.

Traditionally bio-based products are defined as products that reduce the use of non-renewable resources by integrating renewable ingredients or by improving energy efficiency.

Bio Base NWE will provide training and education to help tackle the shortage of skilled professionals in North West Europe’s bio-based industries.

The project, which will help SMEs develop new ideas into marketable products, is partnering with organisations from five different countries including the UK-based National Non-Food Crops Centre (NNFCC).
