GM potatoes for a more sustainable cultivation
Published on 8 January 2013
After a 2-year field trial in Wetteren Flemish scientists concluded that genetically-modified potatoes with multiple resistance to diseases such as those caused by a fungal blight can lead to a more sustainable way of growing.
The cultivation of potatoes in this region has beet affected for decates by fungal blight. Cultivation of potatoes with multiple resistance can reduce fungicide usage by 80%.
The experiment was contucted by scientists from Flanders life sciences research institute (VIB), the Institute for Agricultural and Fisheries Research (ILVO), Ghent University (UGent) and University College Ghent (HoGent)
