Spain: the European barn of biotech corn

Biotech crops in the European Union are just a small island just under 160,000 hectares, within an ocean in the world production of genetically modified -170.3 million hectares. This small percentage, 0.08%, is due solely to Bt corn, the only biotech crop allowed in the Union, and is used to combat insect pest drill. Spain produces 92% of all the Bt maize in the EU: about 148,000 hectares.
