Are GMOs safe?
All biotech crops on the market are guaranteed by public authorities to be at least as safe as conventional crops, both for human and animal consumption, and also for the environment.
Before a genetically modified crop can be grown commercially, it undergoes a rigorous safety assessment by an independent scientific body. In Europe it is the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). GM crops are tested in ways in which conventional and organic crops are not.
It is important to remember that GMOs are part of our everyday lives, with some 3 trillion meals containing GM ingredients having been eaten over the last 20 years without one substantiated food issue. Institutions which have confirmed GMO safety include the European Academies of Science, the World Health Organisation and the European Commission.
