Why do we need to produce more food from less land?

There will be over nine billion people on our planet by 2050. Consumption patterns are changing with an increasing demand for meat. To feed the rapidly growing number of people, the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) estimates that global food supply must increase by 70%. At the same time, we need to avoid the over cultivation of agricultural land and protect our environment: 30% of global land is already degraded and climate change has already made farmers in developing countries lose 10-25% of their productivity.

GMOs can improve yields while using land more sustainably: yields can be increased by 6%-30% on the same amount of land.
