The EU protein deficit, trade and GMOs

This brochure aims to support a rational, coherent and realistic protein strategy in Europe.

Closing the protein gap growing more protein crops in the EU would take very big efforts over many years. The EU should invest more in research and recognise that discriminating against innovation and technology has actually widened the gap.

With this brochure we would like to inform the current debate with the objective of supporting a rational, coherent and realistic protein strategy. Our readers will find in the text all the facts and figures that back a protein strategy based on innovation in local production, GM soybeans and smooth imports.

Given that GM crop technology has been all but expelled from the EU, the hope is that farmers and plant breeders will at least be allowed other modern tools of plant breeding innovation.
