About Anniversary dinner

2021 marked 25 years since the foundation of EuropaBio, the European Association for Bioindustries. As our Anniversary dinner in December 2021 was cancelled due to Covid, we are delighted to confirm 15 November 2022 for the rescheduled event and invite you to join us for an evening of dinner, networking, and discussion.

The theme of the evening is linked to Science-driven transformation for healthy people, planet and economies and the pathway for Europe in delivering on the strength of its science and innovation across all sectors.

The invite-only evening will bring together EuropaBio Members, stakeholders across Europe’s biotech ecosystem, and representatives of the breakthroughs celebrated during our anniversary year.

The event will be hosted at the Solvay Library in Brussels from 19:00 – 22.30, with a drinks reception, seated dinner and discussion.

Ms. Emer Cooke

Executive Director, The European Medicines Agency (EMA)

Emer Cooke began her mandate as Executive Director of EMA on 16 November 2020. She has over 30 years of experience in international regulatory affairs, with more than 18 of these in leadership roles. Before taking up her current role, she was the Director responsible for all medical product related regulatory activities at the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva between November 2016 and November 2020.

Ms. Cooke worked at EMA between 2002 and 2016. She joined the Agency as Head of Inspections and became Head of International Affairs in 2009. Prior to that, she was Principal Administrator in the Pharmaceuticals Unit of the European Commission between 1998 and 2002, with responsibility for inter alia, inspections, international activities including enlargement of the EU and selected legislative initiatives.

Ms Cooke worked for the European Federation of Pharmaceutical industries and Associations (EFPIA) as Manager of Scientific and Regulatory Affairs from 1992 to 1995 and part time from 1996 to 1998. She also worked part time as an independent pharmaceutical policy advisor, based in the Czech Republic, from 1996 to 1998. Ms. Cooke held a number of roles within the Irish pharmaceutical sector between 1985 and 1990 including two years as a pharmaceutical assessor at the Irish medicines regulatory authority. Ms. Cooke holds a degree in pharmacy and two master’s degrees in science and in business administration from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland.

Ms. Patricia Malarkey

EuropaBio Chair, representing Royal DSM

As DSM’s Chief Science Officer, Trish Malarkey shapes DSM’s long-term innovation strategy, accelerating and supporting innovation throughout the company and creating new businesses to deliver DSM’s Purpose-Led, Performance-Driven strategy.

Trish has more than 30 years experience in innovation in the food and agricultural industries. With extensive experience in senior R&D Leadership positions in multinational companies, she has a breadth of technical knowledge across biology, chemistry, and biotechnology.

Most recently Trish has shaped the innovation growth strategy for DSM’s Health, Nutrition and Bioscience organization and as a member of the Executive Committee leads the Science and Innovation Leadership Team. Trish has also acted as a Scientific Advisor for a number of private equity companies and as a Non-Executive Director for Novozymes.

Trish joined DSM in 2019. She is a British and American national, based in Heerlen, The Netherlands.

Mr. Andrew Topen

EuropaBio Board member, representing Novartis

Andrew joined Novartis in September 2019 to lead the overall public affairs strategy and strategic relationships within Region Europe. Since joining Novartis Andrew has represented Novartis on the Board of EuropaBio – The European Association for Bioindustries. In September 2020 he began a 2-year term as Chairman of EuropaBio Board. Before moving to Novartis Andrew worked at Pfizer, where he spent 14 years in various corporate affairs and communication roles. Most recently, he held the position of Vice President, Corporate Affairs for Pfizer’s Essential Health Business Unit, responsible for providing Corporate Affairs leadership for the business; developing and coordinating the execution of government relations, public policy, corporate responsibility and communications strategies that help shape the operating environment in 150 markets.

Andrew was formerly Vice President, Global Media Relations & Digital Communica-tions, responsible for developing Pfizer’s media strategy and execution of the Company’s interaction with the global news media, including Pfizer’s signature “Meet the Press” series, editorial board meetings, press conferences and CEO interviews. Andrew started his career at Pfizer in 2005 as Head of Communications, moving in 2009 to lead proactive communications and issues management as Head of Media Relations for Europe, Middle East, Africa and Asia Pacific.

Prior to joining Pfizer, Andrew was Head of Government Affairs for GlaxoSmithKline providing strategic counsel on government affairs, media relations and issues management to senior management. Andrew established the British Medical Association’s Scottish Parliamentary Office in advance of the new Scottish Parliament and began his career as a Press and Parliamentary Officer in the UK Parliament. Andrew holds a MA, Political Science and Geography from the University of Dundee.

Dr. Claire Skentelbery

Director General, EuropaBio

Claire holds a PhD in biochemistry and has worked in the development of scientific associations for 20 years. She started her career within the UK Cambridge biotech cluster, helping to expand the cluster business network and was a co-founder of the Council of European BioRegions, a network of biotech clusters across Europe. She brought herself and CEBR to Brussels in 2009 where she also took on the role of SG for the European Biotechnology Network, working across sectors, organisations and countries as part of the EBN mission to facilitate partnerships. In January 2017, Claire became DG of the globally-focussed Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA) which she successfully led until November 2020 when she joined EuropaBio as Director General.

She has a driving interest in collaboration across the value chain to develop the business of science, and the role of internationally networked policies, programmes, skills, finance and infrastructures to create a strong landscape.

25 Years of Innovation

2021 marked 25 years since the foundation of EuropaBio aisbl and we have launched a year long celebration of biotechnology advances over the last quarter century.
