European Biotech Week 2022 starts today!

    25/09/2022
    NEWS RELEASE
Brussels, 26 September 2022 – Today starts the European Biotech Week 2022 (hereafter – EBW) which gathers the science community to celebrate the benefits and value that biotechnology brings to people and the planet. EuropaBio’s flagship campaign this year will take place for the 10th time inviting experts, policymakers and citizens to almost 100 events taking place across Europe.

Biotechnology and Life Sciences Associations (at national and local level), schools, universities, research centres, government institutions, companies, science museums and the media have partnered to discuss the recent developments in the field and showcase the best practices.

The EBW will be officially kicked off by EuropaBio’s online event ‘Biotechnology for society, sustainability and economies – transformative science for a changing world’ in the afternoon of the 26th of September, followed by the event ‘Innovative technologies in the EU green transition – spotlight on industrial biotechnology’ the following day and ‘At the cutting edge of biotechnology for cardiovascular diseases: A World Heart Day special edition webinar’ which take place on the 29th of September.

This year participants can choose from a high variety of events such as debates, panels, hands-on workshops, job fairs, networking events, site visits, exhibitions or big conferences which will be taking place onsite, online or in a hybrid format. See the full list of events here or contact your National Biotechnology association.

Follow the updates on the events happening across Europe on European Biotech Week social media channels Twitter and Facebook and EuropaBio Linkedin and Instagram.

    Vitamin B2

The biomanufacturing of Vitamin B2 led to the reduction of 75% of fossil raw materials and 50% operating costs, compared to the chemical process. Vitamin B2 is used in the food, feed or healthcare sectors.

    Insulin

Insulin is one of the most widely known biopharmaceutical. Biotechnology revolutionised its manufacturing process and led to the development of new types of insulin through r-DNA technology.

    Detergents

Enzymes and biosurfactancts are alternative ingredients that improve the performance of detergents, while leading to water and energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions and water toxicity.

    Clothes

Clothes made from alternative fibres produced by microorganisms can be 8x stronger than steel, 100% recyclable, biodegradable and replace fossil-fuel based or resource-intensive textiles.

    Algal Omega 3

Algal Omega-3 is an innovative feed product for aquaculture. It reduces the impact on climate change by 30-40% compared to fish oil and saves 60 tons of wild fish for every ton of Algal Omega-3 used.

    Cheese

Cheese is a vegetarian product thanks to biotechnology. Biotechnology is also essential to produce lactose- or cholesterol-free cheese, as well as alternative proteins.
