SUMMARY:Regulating the Future of Food Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join our Industrial Biotechnology Senior Manager Lucie McMurtry on the 23rd and 24th of October in Amsterdam where she will be speaking at the Regulating the Future of Food Conference. \n\n\n\nGlobal innovation in food-tech is growing at an incredible pace and there are so many amazing new products and processes out there! This innovation is vital in making a difference to the planet by creating more sustainable and ‘greener’ food systems\, whilst also contributing to economic growth. \n\n\n\nRegulators are doing their best to keep up. They are all working on ways to evolve in line with innovation and create more effective and efficient ways to regulate novel foods\, whilst keeping safety as the key priority. However\, regulations are often seen as a barrier to innovation due to complex frameworks\, a lack of clear guidance and long evaluation timelines. \n\n\n\n\nMore Info Here

SUMMARY:EU pharmaceutical legislation - Europe’s biotech innovation in the balance?
DESCRIPTION:Event agenda \n\n\n\n12:00: Registration opens \n\n\n\n12:30: Panel starts \n\n\n\n13:45: Panel close and networking lunch \n\n\n\n15:00: Close \n\n\n\nConfirmed Speakers \n\n\n\nTomislav Sokol MEPMember SANT Committee\, European Parliament \n\n\n\nHilde StevensCo-director\, Institute for Interdisciplinary Innovation in Healthcare (I3H)\, ULB \n\n\n\nKristin ThompsonChief Operating Officer\, eureKARE \n\n\n\nVivian TsevelekiChief Operating Officer\, theraCell \n\n\n\nMore to be announced soon \n\n\n\nIntroduction \n\n\n\nIn April 2023\, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a new Directive and a new Regulation\, aimed at revising and replacing the existing General Pharmaceutical Legislation (GPL). The proposal focuses on modernising the pharmaceutical sector with a patient-centred approach\, while also fully supporting an innovative and competitive industry. \n\n\n\nThrough the proposal\, the EU aims to offer an attractive and innovation-friendly environment for research\, development\, and production of medicines in Europe. The EU plans to create this environment by promoting world-class innovation\, governed by stable and consistent rules that keep pace with innovation and which increase competitiveness while reducing red tape and costs. \n\n\n\nOne of the sectors impacted by the proposal is that of biotechnology\, which has been instrumental in the discovery and development of therapies\, diagnostics\, vaccines and\, most importantly\, advanced medicines. These ‘next generation medicines’ are delivered through a complex and interdependent biotechnology ecosystem\, where companies of all sizes contribute to establishing a pathway to patients. \n\n\n\nJoin this Euractiv Hybrid Conference to discuss Europe’s biotech innovation in light of the EU’s reform of the General Pharmaceutical Legislation. \n\n\n\nQuestions to be discussed include: \n\n\n\n\nHow can Europe’s biotechnology industry maintain its competitiveness in the global medical market?\n\n\n\nHow can we establish a framework that fosters the growth of small biotech innovators?\n\n\n\nWhat are the reactions of investors to the challenges faced by small biotech companies\, and how do these reactions influence the trajectory of innovation in the biotech industry?\n\n\n\nWhat strategies can be employed to establish a successful innovation pathway for biotech companies\, while considering and aligning with the objectives of the reformed GPL?

SUMMARY:SMEs in a Changing World: The Impact of the Revision of the Pharmaceutical Legislation on Europe’s innovative SMEs
DESCRIPTION:In April 2023\, the European Commission published new legislative proposals to revise the EU’s long-standing pharmaceutical legislation and ensure it can meet the challenges of the 21st century. The revision will redefine the regulatory framework for medicines and have a significant impact on the global innovation ecosystem. \n\n\n\nAs emerging and small companies have become innovation drivers\, responsible for over two-thirds of the R&D pipeline that will become the medicines of tomorrow\, changing the rule book that has helped build Europe’s small company ecosystem over the last 20 years is going to have consequences for start-ups\, emerging and small companies looking to first enter the market but also on mid-size companies looking for growth opportunities in Europe. \n\n\n\nThis event will be an opportunity to highlight the role of small and mid-size companies in developing medicines for patients\, assess the foreseeable impacts of the revision on those companies\, and hear directly from them what they need from the revision to continue their journey in Europe.

SUMMARY:Life Sciences Baltics as a contributor to Lithuania’s innovation ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:Life sciences in Lithuania have been a priority for the government for over a decade. Accelerating faster than almost anywhere else in Europe\, the sector aims to contribute 5% to Lithuania’s GDP by 2030. The close cooperation between actors of the ecosystem is one of the reason for success.   \n\n\n\nCreative collaboration takes place in Lithuania’s innovation ecosystem in a variety of ways\, including events\, cross-promotion\, and sharing of resources. The leading life sciences Baltics event in the region – Life Sciences Baltics – is one of the best examples of these collaborations. \n\n\n\nSince its initiation in 2012\, the forum has aimed to create as many opportunities as it is possible for deeper cooperation between the growing life sciences ecosystems in the Baltics and international partners. \n\n\n\nHeld every two years\, the forum has grown from a 300-person assembly to a community of up to 800 key participants from around 40 countries: corporate CEOs\, startup founders\, tech scouts\, investors\, researchers. It is the largest life sciences event in the Eastern and Central Europe. \n\n\n\nThe event will take place in the Lithuania’s capital city of Vilnius on September 20-21. The pre-registration is already open for participants and exhibitors. \n\n\n\nWhether there is a need to kick off the project\, generate leads\, or engage in valuable partnerships\, Life Sciences Baltics offers a diverse range of interactions for its participants: international conference\, exhibition\, networking spaces\, pitch challenge for startups. \n\n\n\nIt also hosts business delegations and offers an opportunity for side visits to Lithuania’s organizations and institutions. \n\n\n\nThe program of the international conference is divided into sessions with the most trending topics worldwide that are also breakthrough areas in the Baltic countries: gene editing\, CRISPR diagnostics\, AI and digital health innovations\, nanomedicine\, microbiome\, reinvention of clinical trials\, digital biomarkers and many more. \n\n\n\nMany big names have attended Life Sciences Baltics\, among them Thermo Fisher Baltics\, Johnson&Johnson\, Clarivate\, Novartis\, Abbvie\, AstraZeneca\, and others. Nobel prize winners Richard Henderson\, Brian Kobilka\, Dan Shechtman\, CRISPR pioneer Prof. Dr Virginijus Šikšnys were among top conference speakers. \n\n\n\nThe event will keep tabs on the fastest growing startups in the region\, but only 10 hand-picked startups will have an opportunity to showcase who they are in front of a panel of investors. \n\n\n\nThe event is organized by Innovation Agency Lithuania\, an official public agency responsible for the Lithuanian innovation ecosystem and is supported by Lithuania’s local ecosystem actors – Lithuanian biotechnology association\, universities\, hospitals\, business angels and Lithuania’s life sciences enthusiasts.  \n\n\n\nThe Baltics\, and Lithuania in particular\, – the next big thing in life sciences  \n\n\n\nLife Sciences Baltics make it possible to assess the attractiveness of the Baltic countries in close-up – Estonia\, Latvia and Lithuania show their distinct\, but strong potential in the sector. \n\n\n\nThree Baltic countries are particularly seeing a growth in life sciences startups. While average funding per startup is decreasing globally\, it’s increasing in the region.  Lithuania attracts growing VC interest into global solutions produced by local entrepreneurs and scientists. \n\n\n\nFocused on nurturing the next generation of talents\, the local life sciences enterprises in the Baltics excel at creativity and entrepreneurship. In 2021 alone\, Lithuania’s life sciences sector grew by almost 87% and generated revenues of 2 billion euros. \n\n\n\n90% of the output of Lithuania’s life sciences are exported to more than 100 countries worldwide. Lithuanian-made medical and pharmaceutical equipment and other products are trusted by customers in the USA\, Germany\, France\, and elsewhere. \n\n\n\nOne of the most prominent players in Lithuania is Thermo Fisher Scientific Baltics\, which has stimulated the development of Lithuania’s industry during the last decade. This company\, along with other international players in the market\, work with local actors for various R&D projects and supply chain. \n\n\n\n\nFor more details

DESCRIPTION:Chairperson: Claire Skentelbery\, Director General EuropaBio \n\n\n\nParticipants: \n\n\n\nKostas Papagiannis Country President & Managing Director Novartis Greece \n\n\n\nHardy Rideout Anacalypsis Therapeutics \n\n\n\nGeorge Drakakis CEO PurposefulEU pharma legislation is going to change your business. What you make\, where and how you sell it\, and whether your business model is even viable. The European Commission published new legislative proposals in April that will redefine the business model of biotechnology in Europe. In trying to bring medicines to more patients\, the legislation proposals reduce data protection\, limit exclusivity for orphan medicines and brings heavy pressure to launch in all 27 Member States within two years of EMA approval.Changing the rule book that has helped build Europe’s small company ecosystem over the last 20 years is going to have consequences for start-ups\, those seeking scale up investment\, clinical trials and companies going to market\, often for the first time. This session/panel\, chaired by EuropaBio\, presents the key impacts points for biotechnology innovation within Greece\, with contributions from small and large companies and policy makers – bring your voice to the discussion for the future of your own science. \n\n\n\n\nMore information
