SUMMARY:EuropaBio Patient BioForum 2022: Toward a Common Understanding of Unmet Medical Needs
DESCRIPTION:EuropaBio’s Patient BioForum meets annually to facilitate the exchange of views and expertise on scientific\, regulatory\, and policy issues between patient organisations and the biopharmaceutical industry. \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, unmet medical needs have been at the core of Europe’s pharmaceutical and public health policies. Addressing unmet medical need was outline as a central to the 2020 Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe. One perceived shortcoming of the current legislative frameworks is insufficient stimulated development in some areas of ‘unmet medical need’ (UMN) such as antimicrobial resistance or rare diseases. The upcoming revision of the EU pharmaceutical legislation and orphan and paediatric legislation will aim at addressing “unmet medical needs”. \n\n\n\nA major hurdle to overcome is reaching a common understanding of unmet medical needs as stakeholders have different understanding of the concept based on different perceptions and expectations. Unmet medical need is scientific concept which can be used to identify patient and societal health needs and stimulate research activities. DESCRIPTION:The Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) aims to build on the successes of the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI) and will hold a launch event in a virtual setting on Wednesday\, January 26th\, from 10:30am to 1:00pm. \n\n\n\nThe event will be broken up into two sessions: \n\n\n\nIn the first session\, IHI Executive Director Dr Pierre Meulien will present IHI and explain why we are launching a new European partnership for health. He will also describe what’s new compared to the Innovative Medicines Initiative (IMI)\, and what will stay the same. IHI staff will then present opportunities for stakeholders to get involved in IHI\, for example by applying to become a member of the IHI Science and Innovation Panel (SIP)\, or by becoming an expert evaluator. Since its inception in December 2020\, four Rare Conversations have taken place\, each in cooperation with a different partner and focused on specific topics\, such as COVID and rare diseases\, the specificities of research in rare disease\, and EU and national value assessment for orphan drugs. People with rare diseases always stay at the centre of our activities and are part of every event.

DESCRIPTION:Germany’s largest biotech event\, the German Biotechnology Days 2021 (Deutsche Biotechnologietage\, DBT)\, will take place on 20th and 21st September in Stuttgart. With over 800 participants\, the event is regarded as the German class reunion for biotechnology. The DBT brings together entrepreneurs with scientists and partners from politics\, funding institutions and administration. \n\n\n\nIn plenary sessions and numerous symposia\, top-class speakers present and discuss the diverse fields of application and the potential of biotechnology\, from health research to bioeconomy\, from medicine to industrial production and plant breeding. Exchange and networking traditionally play a major role at the DBT. The big evening event on the first day of the conference is therefore a further highlight. In addition to the conference programme\, there will also be a large exhibition. \n\n\n\nThe German Biotechnology Days are jointly organised by BIO Deutschland and the Council of German BioRegions. The host region for 2021 is STERN BioRegion from Stuttgart. SUMMARY:Treatment without borders: the EU case for equitable patient access to advanced therapies
DESCRIPTION:The EU Pharmaceutical Strategy is looking to improve patients’ access to therapies for challenging and rare conditions. The EU legislation on cross-border healthcare is an important instrument to ensure patient access to the best available care. There is an urgent need to revise this legislation to enable EU patients to access novel advanced therapies and medicines for rare diseases when these are not available in their home country. \n\n\n\nEuropaBio’s Advanced Therapies Series continues with a virtual discussion on avenues for enhancing the access of EU patients to novel biotechnology-derived treatments on September 7\, 2021\, from 16h00 to 17h00 CET. \n\n\n\nA patient who is also actively engaged in patient advocacy will explain the value of advanced therapies for rare disease patients and the key challenges they encounter when accessing treatments outside their home countries. \n\n\n\nA panel of EU\, national\, and industry representatives will attempt to put forward solutions for securing equitable access to both specialised centres and to treatment for all EU patients in need. SUMMARY:EU Matchmaking Event on COVID-19 Therapeutics
DESCRIPTION:Building on the experience of the EU Task Force for Industrial Scale-up of COVID-19 vaccines\, the European Commission will facilitate cooperation between actors in the supply chain to ensure that available therapeutics are produced in sufficient quantity as soon as possible. In the context of a surge in demand\, it remains crucial to ensure the speedy production of current and new therapeutics against COVID-19. To support the industry\, the Commission organises the pan-EU matchmaking events for all supply chain actors\, so that they find solutions for the bottlenecks encountered. \n\n\n\nMedicines for COVID-19 are still in the development phase. Therefore\, the objective of the event is to help accelerate the development of new and repurposed medicines for COVID-19 therapeutics\, i.e. medicines specifically developed for an indication in treatment of COVID-19\, at all stages of COVID-19 disease and mobilise the EU pharma manufacturing capacity for their potential production. \n\n\n\nThe target group is the entire EU COVID-19 therapeutics value chain starting with researchers and developers\, through manufacturing companies and representatives of the hospitals\, who apply such therapeutics to their patients. The providers of ancillary functions such as clinical trials services\, accessories suppliers (e.g. vials\, syringes\, tubes etc.)\, funding providers and public procurers will also be targeted to take part in the event. \n\n\n\nThe event will take place virtually on 12th and 13th July 2021. 12th July will start with a half-day seminar setting the scene with a welcome by Commissioner Breton and Commissioner Kyriakides. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHow to apply? \n\n\n\nIn order to apply to the event\, European companies must comply with the requirements stated in the event’s Call for Expression of Interest. SUMMARY:An EU Vision for Life Science and Biotechnology for a Healthy and Sustainable EU
DESCRIPTION:With the ambitious target to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 55% compared to 1990 levels by 2030 and the EU Green Deal\, the EU has set clear goals to transform the bloc´s economy making it more sustainable while supporting the EU recovery. \n\n\n\nLife sciences and biotechnology remain critical key-enabling technologies for the economy\, generating GDP of over €34.5 billion\, employing 223\,000 people directly in the EU and generating a trade surplus of €22 billion in 2018.  Moreover\, the CO2 mitigation potential of industrial biotech is estimated between 1-2.5 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalent per year by 2030. \n\n\n\nThe Danish life science and biotechnology contributed to the local economy with over €14 billion export of goods and employing around 48\,000 jobs in 2019. Given the importance of this sector for the Danish economy\, the government is working on a new political strategy for the life science sector to succeed the sector’s growth plan implemented in March 2018. \n\n\n\nThe current COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the need to employ a holistic and strategic approach and exploit synergies among various EU policies\, such as in the areas of research and innovation\, industry and health. Furthermore\, it showed us that the speed at which technologies develop requires that legislation is constantly up-to-date and able to embrace new sustainable innovation. SUMMARY:Measuring the Economic Footprint of the Biotechnology Industry in Europe
DESCRIPTION:Landscape and Positions for Economic Development: Industry and policy discussions to deliver biotechnology in Europe. \n\n\n\n\n\nEuropean GDP benefitted by €38.5 bn in 2018\, in the recent study from EuropaBio ‘Measuring the Economic Footprint of the Biotechnology Industry in Europe’.  The study looked at the economic impact of the biotechnology industry within the (then) 28 European member states\, in terms of gross value added (GVA)\, employment and trade.  Including spill over effects\, that number rises to €78.7bn.  The direct contribution adds up to about 1.5% of total industrial GVA within the countries assessed\, supported by 223\,000 direct jobs rising to over 700\,000 with associated employment. \n\n\n\nVery few other sectors enhance quality of life\, knowledge\, innovation\, productivity\, andenvironmental protection as biotechnology does.  \n\n\n\nJoin EuropaBio on March 4 to find out more about the the economic footprint of biotechnology in Europe and be part of the discussion on its role in future economic recovery and delivering healthy people and planet.

DESCRIPTION:1st International Conference on Rare Diseases \n\n\n\nDifferent infrastructures and organisational arrangements are required in each country to address the healthcare needs of its rare disease population in an effective way. Whether a single rare disease affects thousands or only a handful of individuals\, they all share similar challenges to get a timely diagnosis\, face the same barriers to access highly specialized care and treatment options and need to deal with a substantial psychosocial burden. \n\n\n\nThe health of people living with a rare disease should not be left to luck or chance especially amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Planning ahead requires all stakeholders to acknowledge their individual responsibility to build a successful pathway from diagnosis to access and at the same time\, commit to work together in a much more agile and coordinated way than what we have seen so far. If we fail to do so\, we will have failed the 30 million people living with a rare disease in Europe. \n\n\n\nThe 1st International Conference on Rare Diseases “Building a Pathway from Diagnosis to Access” recognises that the next decade holds great potential for improvement and that while we cannot predict the future\, we all have a role in preparing for it.
