DESCRIPTION:BIOSPAIN is the largest biotech event organized by a national bioindustry association in Europe and one of the largest in the world by the number of one-to-one meetings and companies participating. 34% of our delegates came from outside of Spain. \n\n\n\nThis year\, BIOSPAIN goes back to Barcelona\, the main biotech cluster in Spain and one of the most dynamic cities in the world. \n\n\n\nThe event will take place in Pavilion 1 – Fira de Barcelona – Montjuïc. SUMMARY:European Biotech Week 2022: Innovative technologies in the EU green transition – spotlight on industrial biotechnology
DESCRIPTION:Industrial Biotechnology-derived products offer significant potential for contributing to overcoming many EU socio-economic and environmental challenges. It is not a new sector. On the contrary\, for thousands of years the power of microbes has been harnessed in food production and beverages. In the past century\, the applications for IB have expanded greatly with IB now providing living microorganisms and fermentation products that are used in sectors as diverse as food and feed\, agriculture\, detergents\, paper and pulp\, textiles\, fuels\, bioenergy\, and specialty chemicals. \n\n\n\nResearch and innovation are key drivers to accelerate the green transition. Indeed\, the EU Green Deal notes that “New technologies\, sustainable solutions and disruptive innovation are critical to achieve the objectives of the European Green Deal”. In this context\, a range of solutions will be needed. Alternatives to fossil-based products\, improved resource efficiency of industrial processes\, innovative food and feed are all targets where industrial biotechnology and bioeconomy innovation can deliver. \n\n\n\nThis webinar will discuss innovative solutions that can contribute towards the green transition\, with a focus on industrial biotechnology. DESCRIPTION:Germany’s largest biotech event\, the German Biotechnology Days 2021 (Deutsche Biotechnologietage\, DBT)\, will take place on 20th and 21st September in Stuttgart. With over 800 participants\, the event is regarded as the German class reunion for biotechnology. The DBT brings together entrepreneurs with scientists and partners from politics\, funding institutions and administration. \n\n\n\nIn plenary sessions and numerous symposia\, top-class speakers present and discuss the diverse fields of application and the potential of biotechnology\, from health research to bioeconomy\, from medicine to industrial production and plant breeding. Exchange and networking traditionally play a major role at the DBT. The big evening event on the first day of the conference is therefore a further highlight. In addition to the conference programme\, there will also be a large exhibition. \n\n\n\nThe German Biotechnology Days are jointly organised by BIO Deutschland and the Council of German BioRegions. The host region for 2021 is STERN BioRegion from Stuttgart. As a partner region\, we are looking forward to BioLAGO\, the network for the health industry in the Lake Constance region. \n\n\n\nAbout the organizersBIO Deutschland e. V.\, the industry association of the German biotechnology industry\, and the Council of German BioRegions have been jointly organising the German Biotechnology Days since 2010. DESCRIPTION:The conference is one of the oldest and most established worldwide and has developed into a unique meeting place for the entire Carbon Capture & Utilisation (CCU) and Power-to-X industry and its customers. \n\n\n\nThe first day will focus on CO2-based transport and aviation fuels\, the second on CO2-based bulk and fine chemicals. CCU technologies are essential to meet the future demand for carbon from renewable sources. Take a look into the near future and exchange ideas with the leading pioneers. \n\n\n\nCCU is one essential pillar for the supply of renewable carbon besides biomass and recycling. The transition to direct CO2 utilisation as one alternative carbon source is needed to substitute fossil sources\, to fight climate change and to shift towards sustainable and climate-friendly production and consumption. For providing the full benefits of CCU technologies the use of renewable energy is indispensable. Especially the supply of green hydrogen is crucial for the production of CO2-based transportation and aviation fuels\, bulk and fine chemicals. \n\n\n\nA large number of European cross-sectoral projects for hydrogen production via large-scale electrolysers have been announced recently. The European Commission launched a 400 Billion hydrogen strategy for the full energy transition to renewable energies\, as well as for the further use of hydrogen in innovations and technologies such as the production of high-volume synthetic fuels and chemicals. \n\n\n\nMeanwhile\, 100 projects on CO2-based fuel and chemical production\, as well as efficient capture and utilisation technologies have been launched by several start-ups and established companies\, ranging from pilot over demonstration to commercial scale. Even more players show their interest in getting involved in CCU and are increasingly planning and implementing more plants on different scales for Power-to-X technologies\, low carbon fuels and a CO2-based chemistry. Great visions are becoming real business cases and innovations are starting to realise their potential! \n\n\n\nNew and leading players will showcase novel and improved applications based on the use of CO2 as feedstock. Main topics of the conference are green hydrogen production\, carbon capture technologies and carbon utilisation (Power-to-X): Transportation and aviation fuels\, building-blocks\, bulk and fine chemicals as well as advanced technologies for CO2 utilisation such as artificial photosynthesis.

SUMMARY:Empowering the Circular Bioeconomy through the EU Green Deal
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 Circular Economy Action Plan is one of the main blocks of the European Green Deal – Europe’s new agenda for sustainable growth – including initiatives along the entire life cycle of products and aiming at rendering sustainable products the norm in the EU. It focuses on boosting circular economy processes\, fostering sustainable consumption\, and safeguarding that the resources used are kept in the economy for as long as possible. In addition\, it remains committed to making circularity work for people\, regions\, and cities\, while leading global efforts on circular economy. \n\n\n\nAt the same time\, and closely linked with the above\, the bioeconomy offers great potential in contributing to tackle environmental and societal challenges\, such as resource efficiency\, climate change\, maintaining European competitiveness and job creation. The bioeconomy can therefore play a significant role in the EU Green Deal and particularly in the transition to a circular economy\, as outlined in a position paper developed by the European Bioeconomy Alliance. SUMMARY:Measuring the Economic Footprint of the Biotechnology Industry in Europe
DESCRIPTION:Landscape and Positions for Economic Development: Industry and policy discussions to deliver biotechnology in Europe. \n\n\n\n\n\nEuropean GDP benefitted by €38.5 bn in 2018\, in the recent study from EuropaBio ‘Measuring the Economic Footprint of the Biotechnology Industry in Europe’.  The study looked at the economic impact of the biotechnology industry within the (then) 28 European member states\, in terms of gross value added (GVA)\, employment and trade.  Including spill over effects\, that number rises to €78.7bn.  The direct contribution adds up to about 1.5% of total industrial GVA within the countries assessed\, supported by 223\,000 direct jobs rising to over 700\,000 with associated employment. \n\n\n\nVery few other sectors enhance quality of life\, knowledge\, innovation\, productivity\, andenvironmental protection as biotechnology does.  \n\n\n\nJoin EuropaBio on March 4 to find out more about the the economic footprint of biotechnology in Europe and be part of the discussion on its role in future economic recovery and delivering healthy people and planet.

DESCRIPTION:The only way for chemicals and plastics to become sustainable\, climate-friendly and part of the circular economy is the complete substitution of fossil carbon with renewable carbon from alternative sources: biomass\, CO2 and recycling. Sold out PLA in 2019 has led to the installation of increased capacities in 2020\, PE and PP made from bio-based naphtha are breaking ground and future expansion for bio-based polyamides will come into place\, growth for bio-based polymers is expected to over 6 % until 2025. Additionally\, the use of CO2 as chemical feedstock for polymers has been intensively diversified. Besides the long-established use of CO2 for the synthesis of polycarbonates\, also polyurethanes can already be based on it.
