SUMMARY:Regulating the Future of Food Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join our Industrial Biotechnology Senior Manager Lucie McMurtry on the 23rd and 24th of October in Amsterdam where she will be speaking at the Regulating the Future of Food Conference. \n\n\n\nGlobal innovation in food-tech is growing at an incredible pace and there are so many amazing new products and processes out there! This innovation is vital in making a difference to the planet by creating more sustainable and ‘greener’ food systems\, whilst also contributing to economic growth. \n\n\n\nRegulators are doing their best to keep up. They are all working on ways to evolve in line with innovation and create more effective and efficient ways to regulate novel foods\, whilst keeping safety as the key priority. However\, regulations are often seen as a barrier to innovation due to complex frameworks\, a lack of clear guidance and long evaluation timelines. \n\n\n\n\nMore Info Here

SUMMARY:Industrial biotech: Is Europe ready to harness its potential?
DESCRIPTION:A Science | Business closed-door roundtable\, organised in partnership with EuropaBio – followed by networking reception \n\n\n\nOnly By Invitation \n\n\n\n \n\n\nBackground Information \nIn recent years industrial biotechnology – also known as “white” biotech – has emerged as a high-value driver of industrial modernisation and the green transition. Through the innovative use of microorganisms and enzymes\, it has transformative potential for manufacturing\, waste use and the creation of sustainable products in sectors as varied as energy\, textiles\, plastics\, paper\, agriculture and water. While some core processes\, such as fermentation technology\, have been commercially deployed for around 50 years\, the speed of scientific progress and solution development are accelerating exponentially. As such\, it appears that the sector as a whole is truly poised to make the leap from “proof of concept” to mainstream application at the European level. \nThese take on greater importance when one considers other strategic priorities for the EU. First\, it is clear that for Europe to achieve e.g. its 2030 benchmark for net-zero technology manufacturing in the Green Deal Industrial Plan (GDIP)\, it will need to leverage its full innovation capacity across sectors. Second\, as global demand grows for sustainable solutions to climate\, energy\, biodiversity and food system crises\, Europe is ideally positioned to take market leadership in various domains\, given its research excellence and strong industrial base. And third\, the EU’s proposed Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP) has already identified biotechnologies among its key value chains to ensure future resilience\, autonomy and competitiveness\, while biotechnology has also been recognised as a critical technology for Europe. \nYet a degree of skepticism remains – both in public and policy circles – about the risk/reward ratio of biotechnologies and their wider value to society. One useful counterpoint is to consider the evolution of health-related biotechnology (often called “red” biotech). Having overcome similar resistance and concerns\, “red” biotech is now deployed at scale throughout the life science and pharmaceutical sectors\, and is acknowledged today as a key component in European health innovation. So how can the lessons learned on that journey be absorbed and applied to other sectors? \n As the EU prepares for its transition to a new Parliament and Commission\, it is therefore an ideal moment to open a multistakeholder dialogue on how policy and regulatory innovations could increase the European added value of “white” biotech and biomanufacturing in the years to come. This also builds on Ursula von der Leyen’s announcement of a new biotech and biomanufacturing initiative in last September’s state-of-the-union address. Among some of the key issues for consideration: \nWhere can industrial biotech and biomanufacturing contribute most effectively to the GDIP and STEP\, and what are the longer-term implications for boosting the global competitiveness of European companies?\nWhat should underpin a future EU roadmap for advancing “white” biotech and biomanufacturing across sectors\, in line with other long-term strategies and objectives?\nWhich other steps are needed at EU and national level to build future capacity\, such as infrastructure and skills?\nIn which ways can public and private finance best support pioneering “white” biotech firms – large and small – in scaling up and maturing their solutions to market-readiness and mass production levels\, as has happened in the health sector?\nBeyond the CBE Joint Undertaking\, to what extent could Horizon Europe\, FP10 and other key instruments – such as the new biotech & biomanufacturing initiative – strengthen Europe’s industrial biotech R&D ecosystem in the next policy cycle?\nOn March 19\, Science|Business\, in cooperation with EuropaBio\, will convene a select group of senior figures and experts from across the industrial biotech spectrum to address these issues in a closed-door\, invitation-only roundtable. Drawing in part on latest research and real-world applications\, the meeting will identify recommendations to harness the full potential of “white” biotech and biomanufacturing\, and to align its further development with the realisation of key EU policy goals.\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please contact: denitsa.nikolova@sciencebusiness.ne \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nClick here for more information

SUMMARY:EU pharmaceutical legislation - Europe’s biotech innovation in the balance?
DESCRIPTION:Event agenda \n\n\n\n12:00: Registration opens \n\n\n\n12:30: Panel starts \n\n\n\n13:45: Panel close and networking lunch \n\n\n\n15:00: Close \n\n\n\nConfirmed Speakers \n\n\n\nTomislav Sokol MEPMember SANT Committee\, European Parliament \n\n\n\nHilde StevensCo-director\, Institute for Interdisciplinary Innovation in Healthcare (I3H)\, ULB \n\n\n\nKristin ThompsonChief Operating Officer\, eureKARE \n\n\n\nVivian TsevelekiChief Operating Officer\, theraCell \n\n\n\nMore to be announced soon \n\n\n\nIntroduction \n\n\n\nIn April 2023\, the European Commission adopted a proposal for a new Directive and a new Regulation\, aimed at revising and replacing the existing General Pharmaceutical Legislation (GPL). The proposal focuses on modernising the pharmaceutical sector with a patient-centred approach\, while also fully supporting an innovative and competitive industry. \n\n\n\nThrough the proposal\, the EU aims to offer an attractive and innovation-friendly environment for research\, development\, and production of medicines in Europe. The EU plans to create this environment by promoting world-class innovation\, governed by stable and consistent rules that keep pace with innovation and which increase competitiveness while reducing red tape and costs. \n\n\n\nOne of the sectors impacted by the proposal is that of biotechnology\, which has been instrumental in the discovery and development of therapies\, diagnostics\, vaccines and\, most importantly\, advanced medicines. These ‘next generation medicines’ are delivered through a complex and interdependent biotechnology ecosystem\, where companies of all sizes contribute to establishing a pathway to patients. \n\n\n\nJoin this Euractiv Hybrid Conference to discuss Europe’s biotech innovation in light of the EU’s reform of the General Pharmaceutical Legislation. \n\n\n\nQuestions to be discussed include: \n\n\n\n\nHow can Europe’s biotechnology industry maintain its competitiveness in the global medical market?\n\n\n\nHow can we establish a framework that fosters the growth of small biotech innovators?\n\n\n\nWhat are the reactions of investors to the challenges faced by small biotech companies\, and how do these reactions influence the trajectory of innovation in the biotech industry?\n\n\n\nWhat strategies can be employed to establish a successful innovation pathway for biotech companies\, while considering and aligning with the objectives of the reformed GPL?
