SUMMARY:The economic power of biotechnology for Europe
DESCRIPTION:The world is at a key point of industrial and societal transition\, driven by advancing technology and the need for competitive\, resilient and sustainable economies. \n\n\n\nBiotechnology is at the heart of this transition across all sectors and it is playing a significant role in shaping Europe’s future. \n\n\n\nEuropean Biotech Week kick starts with a look at how biotechnology performs in the European Union’s economy. \n\n\n\nProfessor Dennis Ostwald\, founder and CEO of the WifOR Institute presents the 2023 edition of EuropaBio’s ‘Measuring the economic footprint of the biotechnology industry in Europe’. Professor Ostwald showcases how biotechnology contributes across healthcare and industrial sectors in the light of Europe’s response to Covid\, global supply chains stressed further by the Russian invasion of Ukraine\, and at a time when Europe also has ambitious climate change goals. \n\n\n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nProfessor Dr. Dennis A. Ostwald. Through his studies\, Prof. Ostwald aims to make the importance of health innovations visible and enable evidence-based decision making for a healthy society. He conducts research on topics such as health economics\, the value of impacts\, and international social policy. Prof. Ostwald studied Industrial Engineering and Management at the Technical University of Darmstadt\, Germany and received his PhD from the Chair of Finance and Economic Policy\, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Bert Rürup\, on the topic “Growth and employment effects of the healthcare industry”. As Professor of Economic Research and International Management at the Steinbeis School of International Business and Entrepreneurship (SIBE)\, he wants to develop young talents into responsible managers who understand the interplay between social\, environmental and economic sustainability.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nJoin EuropaBio to understand how biotechnology is increasing its role with Europe’s economy and discuss with Members what this means for sectors\, countries and citizens. \n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:Life Sciences Baltics as a contributor to Lithuania’s innovation ecosystem
DESCRIPTION:Life sciences in Lithuania have been a priority for the government for over a decade. Accelerating faster than almost anywhere else in Europe\, the sector aims to contribute 5% to Lithuania’s GDP by 2030. The close cooperation between actors of the ecosystem is one of the reason for success.   \n\n\n\nCreative collaboration takes place in Lithuania’s innovation ecosystem in a variety of ways\, including events\, cross-promotion\, and sharing of resources. The leading life sciences Baltics event in the region – Life Sciences Baltics – is one of the best examples of these collaborations. \n\n\n\nSince its initiation in 2012\, the forum has aimed to create as many opportunities as it is possible for deeper cooperation between the growing life sciences ecosystems in the Baltics and international partners. \n\n\n\nHeld every two years\, the forum has grown from a 300-person assembly to a community of up to 800 key participants from around 40 countries: corporate CEOs\, startup founders\, tech scouts\, investors\, researchers. It is the largest life sciences event in the Eastern and Central Europe. \n\n\n\nThe event will take place in the Lithuania’s capital city of Vilnius on September 20-21. The pre-registration is already open for participants and exhibitors. \n\n\n\nWhether there is a need to kick off the project\, generate leads\, or engage in valuable partnerships\, Life Sciences Baltics offers a diverse range of interactions for its participants: international conference\, exhibition\, networking spaces\, pitch challenge for startups. \n\n\n\nIt also hosts business delegations and offers an opportunity for side visits to Lithuania’s organizations and institutions. \n\n\n\nThe program of the international conference is divided into sessions with the most trending topics worldwide that are also breakthrough areas in the Baltic countries: gene editing\, CRISPR diagnostics\, AI and digital health innovations\, nanomedicine\, microbiome\, reinvention of clinical trials\, digital biomarkers and many more. \n\n\n\nMany big names have attended Life Sciences Baltics\, among them Thermo Fisher Baltics\, Johnson&Johnson\, Clarivate\, Novartis\, Abbvie\, AstraZeneca\, and others. Nobel prize winners Richard Henderson\, Brian Kobilka\, Dan Shechtman\, CRISPR pioneer Prof. Dr Virginijus Šikšnys were among top conference speakers. \n\n\n\nThe event will keep tabs on the fastest growing startups in the region\, but only 10 hand-picked startups will have an opportunity to showcase who they are in front of a panel of investors. \n\n\n\nThe event is organized by Innovation Agency Lithuania\, an official public agency responsible for the Lithuanian innovation ecosystem and is supported by Lithuania’s local ecosystem actors – Lithuanian biotechnology association\, universities\, hospitals\, business angels and Lithuania’s life sciences enthusiasts.  \n\n\n\nThe Baltics\, and Lithuania in particular\, – the next big thing in life sciences  \n\n\n\nLife Sciences Baltics make it possible to assess the attractiveness of the Baltic countries in close-up – Estonia\, Latvia and Lithuania show their distinct\, but strong potential in the sector. \n\n\n\nThree Baltic countries are particularly seeing a growth in life sciences startups. While average funding per startup is decreasing globally\, it’s increasing in the region.  Lithuania attracts growing VC interest into global solutions produced by local entrepreneurs and scientists. \n\n\n\nFocused on nurturing the next generation of talents\, the local life sciences enterprises in the Baltics excel at creativity and entrepreneurship. In 2021 alone\, Lithuania’s life sciences sector grew by almost 87% and generated revenues of 2 billion euros. \n\n\n\n90% of the output of Lithuania’s life sciences are exported to more than 100 countries worldwide. Lithuanian-made medical and pharmaceutical equipment and other products are trusted by customers in the USA\, Germany\, France\, and elsewhere. \n\n\n\nOne of the most prominent players in Lithuania is Thermo Fisher Scientific Baltics\, which has stimulated the development of Lithuania’s industry during the last decade. This company\, along with other international players in the market\, work with local actors for various R&D projects and supply chain. \n\n\n\n\nFor more details

SUMMARY:GREEK BIOPHARMA INNOVATION: Your changing world with the new EU Pharma Legislation
DESCRIPTION:Chairperson: Claire Skentelbery\, Director General EuropaBio \n\n\n\nParticipants: \n\n\n\nKostas Papagiannis Country President & Managing Director Novartis Greece \n\n\n\nHardy Rideout Anacalypsis Therapeutics \n\n\n\nGeorge Drakakis CEO PurposefulEU pharma legislation is going to change your business. What you make\, where and how you sell it\, and whether your business model is even viable. The European Commission published new legislative proposals in April that will redefine the business model of biotechnology in Europe. In trying to bring medicines to more patients\, the legislation proposals reduce data protection\, limit exclusivity for orphan medicines and brings heavy pressure to launch in all 27 Member States within two years of EMA approval.Changing the rule book that has helped build Europe’s small company ecosystem over the last 20 years is going to have consequences for start-ups\, those seeking scale up investment\, clinical trials and companies going to market\, often for the first time. This session/panel\, chaired by EuropaBio\, presents the key impacts points for biotechnology innovation within Greece\, with contributions from small and large companies and policy makers – bring your voice to the discussion for the future of your own science. \n\n\n\n\nMore information

SUMMARY:EuropaBio: BIO 2023
DESCRIPTION:Round table –Biomanufacturing for health: advancing healthcare and global preparedness \n\n\n\n\n\nEuropaBio is pleased to host a round table discussion at the upcoming BIO International Convention in Boston and invites all delegates to join us to discuss on biomanufacturing for health: advancing healthcare and global prepareness. \n\n\n\nBiomanufacturing within healthcare represents an advance in therapeutic capabilities\, as ground-breaking research translates into increased diseases that can be targeted\, either for the first time or with greater efficacy\, with increasingly complex interventions becoming possible. It also brings resilience and increased environmental sustainability to strained supply chains as the world strives to modernise production systems. \n\n\n\nThe transition has significant implications for global healthcare\, competitiveness\, sustainability and resilience\, with capacity building important in all regions. \n\n\n\nThis is not just reflected in advancing healthcare for citizens but also for the world’s ability to respond to healthcare crises.  Covid demonstrated that  biomanufacturing capacity globally was called into action from multiple applications and countries for the complex manufacturing process behind vaccines. \n\n\n\nThis biomanufacturing capacity does not exist within a vacuum\, ready to be called to action when needed. It requires drug developers large and small\, public and private\, specialised manufacturers\, plus skills base\, supply chain and logistics frameworks resulting from significant investment over many years. \n\n\n\nImportantly\, a sustainable biomanufacturing framework is financed and delivered primarily through industry\, meaning that is must be integral to company strategy. This is not a guarantee\, as the global healthcare industry reacts to legislative changes and government strategies\, with major investment decisions having long term implications for the capacity and skills base within countries and regions. \n\n\n\nWhat does the world need to get right to ensure that biomanufacturing capacity grows\, to serve patients with advancing therapies and be there for coordinated emergency responses? \n\n\n\nParticipants within the round table reflect global biomanufacturing stakeholders and will discuss: \n\n\n\n\nNational policies\, incentives and strategy\n\n\n\nRegulatory and standards and alignment\n\n\n\nInternational cooperation and development\n\n\n\n\nThe output from this roundtable will be a call to global action for biomanufacturing published through EuropaBio and BIO\, with all delegates invited to contribute through the round table and follow up. \n\n\n\nAgenda \n\n\n\n10:30Welcome and introductionEuropaBio and BIO10:40Setting the scene for global biomanufacturing and the planned outcome from the round tableClaire10:45(draft) Discussion points for participants: – What does your country need to achieve for resilience through national or accessible biomanufacturing capacity?– How are regulatory frameworks adapting to an increasingly biological pipeline of medicines?– What does international cooperation need to achieve to ensure that manufacturing is actually possible during pandemic responses?– Name a priority for you to reach biomanufacturing goals in the coming years. All participants: Lead interventions on specific topics11:30Closing remarksEuropaBio and BIO\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nMore information here

SUMMARY:Development of Orphan Biologics: Challenges and Opportunities
DESCRIPTION:Webinar sponsored by Catalent \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe development of therapies for rare diseases comes with distinct challenges\, including patient recruitment\, setting meaningful clinical endpoints\, manufacturing and supply and finding the regulatory and market pathway to ensure patients can access therapy. \n\n\n\nFor biologic products (growth factors\, monoclonal antibodies\, other complex proteins)\, development and production costs tend to be higher due to the complexity of the drug substance. To manage costs\, the clinical development and manufacturing and Chemistry\, Manufacturing and Controls (CMC) teams need to be aligned to ensure drug product is delivered on time to meet clinical trial needs. \n\n\n\nThese challenges sit within a wider regulatory and legislative framework for orphan medicinal products (OMPs) that defines whether companies can successfully develop a novel product to market and thus the decisions made for selecting therapeutics and target diseases early in development. \n\n\n\nDuring this webinar\, speakers cover aspects of clinical trial design for orphan biologics products\, key strategies for ensuring clinical trial supply throughout clinical development and the regulatory and legislative framework for delivery to patients.Key Learning Objectives \n\n\n\n\nConsiderations in identifying meaningful clinical endpoints for orphan diseases\n\n\n\nOrphan clinical trial design considerations and strategies to ensure sufficient patient recruitment\n\n\n\nManufacturing and clinical supply strategies to ensure supply of clinical trial materials while collecting data needed to support NDA submission\n\n\n\nRegulatory and legislative frameworks that guide decision making for innovation in rare diseases\n\n\n\n\nAgenda \n\n\n\n15:00: Welcome and introduction – Claire Skentelbery\, Director General EuropaBio \n\n\n\n15:05: Current Development of Orphan Drugs in Europe – Matthias Schoenermark\, Professor\, President and CEO\, SKC Beratungsgesellschaft mbH \n\n\n\nProf. Schönermark opens the session with an overview of the current status of orphan drug development in the EU. He discusses the main challenges for market entry of new orphan drugs into the EU market and highlights key recommendations to drug developers to address these challenges. \n\n\n\n15:20: Orphan Biologics and CGT Development – CMC and Clinical Trial Supply Considerations – Wai Lam Ling\, Ph.D.\, Vice President\, Science and Technology\,  Catalent \n\n\n\nDr. Ling discusses the difference in CMC challenges encountered during an orphan biologics vs CGT programme\, with a focus on product quality as the most significant hurdle to approval. She addresses manufacturing approaches to ensure regulatory compliance and factors behind a successful product\, particularly robust\, reproducible and cost-effective pathways. Finally\, supply chain liabilities are discussed\, with risks to production of biologics and their clinical supply. \n\n\n\n15:45: Successful Strategies and Business Model For Companies Bringing Their Orphan Drug To Market –Thomas Bols\, Head of Government Affairs and Patient Advocacy\, EMEA & APAC\, PTC Therapeutics \n\n\n\nThomas Bols addresses the spectrum of opportunities and barriers for innovation within orphan drug development\, particularly across different regulatory territories\, and the critical role of smaller companies in addressing unmet medical needs. He focuses on the legislative and regulatory pathways that exist in Europe for orphan drugs and the potential impact of the upcoming pharmaceutical and OMP legislation revisions for company innovation and patient benefits. \n\n\n\n16:00: Close \n\n\n\n\nRegister here

SUMMARY:CLIB International Conference CIC2023
DESCRIPTION:From 14 to 15 February 2023\, the CLIB International Conference will take place in Düsseldorf\, Germany\, organised by CLIB – Cluster industrial biotechnology. Under the title ” Setting sail for industrial implementation” different sessions will debate how biotechnology help achieve the climate and sustainability goals. On the first day of the CIC2023\, the focus will be on levers in this monumental transformation\, highlighting where biotechnology can really make a difference: to harness sustainable resources\, to enable innovative processes\, and ultimately to close the carbon cycle. \n\n\n\nOn the second day\, CIC2023 will host the FARMŸNG satellite event\, focusing on zero-waste biorefineries. After inputs from this CBE JU flagship\, which is constructing the first-of-a-kind vertical large-scale insect farm\, other speakers will expand the scope towards other value chains\, discussing how zero-waste biorefineries can be planned\, built\, and sustainably supplied with feedstock\, all the while closing resource loops. A final keynote will focus on investing in scale-up projects and a holistic view on sustainability. \n\n\n\nAbout 200 participants are expected\, with representatives from industry\, a large number of national and international SMEs\, research institutions and stakeholders from politics and associations. In recent years\, the CIC has established itself as a platform to initiate partnerships along value chains in the bio and circular economy. \n\n\n\nAbout CIC – CLIB International Conference \n\n\n\nThis is the annual international conference of the Cluster Industrial Biotechnology\, initiated in 2009 and now in its 13th edition. The CIC has established itself as a platform to initiate partnerships along value chains in the bio and circular economy\, each year kicking off the biotech and bioeconomy conference circle early in the year. It has about 200 participants\, with representatives from industry\, a large number of national and international SMEs\, research institutions\, and stakeholders from politics and associations. \n\n\n\nAbout CLIB – Cluster Industrial Biotechnology \n\n\n\nCLIB (Cluster Industrial Biotechnology) is an international open innovation cluster of large companies\, SMEs\, academic institutes\, and universities\, as well as other stakeholders active in biotechnology and the circular bioeconomy as a whole. The cluster comprises over 100 members with a share of about 25 % international members. The overall goal of CLIB is to network stakeholders along and across value chains and to identify new opportunities for innovation\, projects\, and business. Through this\, the cluster develops cross-sectoral biotechnological solutions for sustainable processes and products. Pertinent project areas are identified by the CLIB team in conjunction with members in an iterative process. SUMMARY:EuropaBio Patient BioForum 2022: Toward a Common Understanding of Unmet Medical Needs
DESCRIPTION:EuropaBio’s Patient BioForum meets annually to facilitate the exchange of views and expertise on scientific\, regulatory\, and policy issues between patient organisations and the biopharmaceutical industry. \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, unmet medical needs have been at the core of Europe’s pharmaceutical and public health policies. Addressing unmet medical need was outline as a central to the 2020 Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe. One perceived shortcoming of the current legislative frameworks is insufficient stimulated development in some areas of ‘unmet medical need’ (UMN) such as antimicrobial resistance or rare diseases. The upcoming revision of the EU pharmaceutical legislation and orphan and paediatric legislation will aim at addressing “unmet medical needs”. \n\n\n\nA major hurdle to overcome is reaching a common understanding of unmet medical needs as stakeholders have different understanding of the concept based on different perceptions and expectations. Unmet medical need is scientific concept which can be used to identify patient and societal health needs and stimulate research activities. As science progresses\, and with it the knowledge to address unmet medical needs\, these needs will evolve over time from improving mortality\, modifying disease progression\, improving quality of life\, burden of the disease\, and potentially curing. \n\n\n\nBringing together multiple stakeholder groups\, including patients and industry\, the 2022 Patient BioForum is an opportunity to listen to patients’ understandings and experiences with unmet medical needs and facilitate progress towards a common understanding on unmet medical needs. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nSpeakers \n\n\n\n\nJoelle Khraiche\, EuropaBio\, Patient BioForum co-chair\n\n\n\n\n\nAnca Toma\, EPF\, Patient BioForum co-chair\n\n\n\n\n\nTobias S.
