The path forward for a green transition highlighted at EFIB2020

Brussels, 16 October 2020 – The 13th annual European Forum for Industrial Biotechnology and the Bioeconomy (EFIB) gathered industry, academia, and policy representatives in a fully virtual setting from 5-9 October to discuss how industrial biotechnology and bio-based innovation can play a key role in the transition to a more sustainable and circular economy. 350 participants took part from 29 countries and 270 companies.

The 5-day EFIB2020 conference focused on advancing the green economy with biotechnology innovation and included 24 sessions with over 100 speakers, exploring 6 key focus topics including trends, innovation and policy perspectives on food, feed & nutrition, bioplastics, financing & investing and bio-based industrial processes and much more.   

The conference also included a digital Start-Up Forum, with 31 innovative start-ups taking part, and an Innovation Campus showcasing innovative scientific approaches in  industrial biotechnology and the bioeconomy through 12 poster presentations. Voted by its peers as the winning start-up and praised for combining traditional food technology and innovative biotechnology was Better Nature, a UK-based start-up and the world’s first food-tech company to focus on tempeh fermentation and innovation. The best poster presentation was awarded to Sylvain Carcelle of Bioréa, for a ground-breaking advance in bioreactor technology, providing new horizons for microalgae use in food, feed, and environmental applications.
