Phytolon joins EuropaBio: natural food colours for better health and environmental sustainability

Brussels, 13 July 2022 – EuropaBio is pleased to announce that Phytolon has joined as a corporate member.

Founded in 2018 by biotechnology entrepreneurs, Phytolon offers the food industry an ultimate solution to the food coloring challenge: Phytolon’s natural colors are produced via yeast fermentation and therefore comply with the consumers’ needs for healthy and sustainable food, and with the industry's requirements for cost efficiency and high quality.

Phytolon is an active player in the industrial biotech field with a near-market ready product. Combining advanced research and scaling capabilities together with strong relations within the foodtech industry, they have gained expertise in small- and large-scale production, as well as commercialization and regulation.

EuropaBio Director-General Dr. Claire Skentelbery commented “We are glad to have another SME among our members: small and medium-sized enterprises and entrepreneurs are the primary deliverers of innovation, and we cannot wait to join forces with Phytolon to promote biotech innovation and remove barriers”.

Phytolon Co-Founder and CEO, Dr. Halim Jubran, added: “We are thrilled to join EuropaBio to strengthen our network and impact. We believe that by collaborating with other biotech organizations we can promote the commercial and public-opinion agenda.”

Cheese

Cheese is a vegetarian product thanks to biotechnology. Biotechnology is also essential to produce lactose- or cholesterol-free cheese, as well as alternative proteins.

Clothes

Clothes made from alternative fibres produced by microorganisms can be 8x stronger than steel, 100% recyclable, biodegradable and replace fossil-fuel based or resource-intensive textiles.

Vitamin B2

The biomanufacturing of Vitamin B2 led to the reduction of 75% of fossil raw materials and 50% operating costs, compared to the chemical process. Vitamin B2 is used in the food, feed or healthcare sectors.

Detergents

Enzymes and biosurfactancts are alternative ingredients that improve the performance of detergents, while leading to water and energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions and water toxicity.

Insulin

Insulin is one of the most widely known biopharmaceutical. Biotechnology revolutionised its manufacturing process and led to the development of new types of insulin through r-DNA technology.
