EU commission backs GM maize cultivation

The EU commission Wednesday decided to back a genetically modified maize known as 1507, with the issue now going to member states. If there is no qualified majority against the decision, cultivation will go ahead. Green groups have raised objections to the maize, by US company Pioneer, on environmental grounds.
