Top French court lifts ban on growing Monsanto GM corn
Published 1 August 2013
The highest court in France, the Council of State (Conseil d’Etat), ruled that the French government’s ban on MON810 cultivation is illegal. The ban was challenged by the French seed association (UFS), the seed production association (FNPSMS), the National corn growers association (AGPM). The Court confirmed that a ban can only be invoked when there is a clear and serious risk to human and animal health or the environment – which is not the case here. This ruling is a positive endorsement of the safety of MON810 and of a scientific approach to assessment.
