Good Health Starts in the Gut with HOWARU® Probiotics

    18/09/2024

    CASE STUDY

    Submission from IFF

    The innovation.

They say good health starts in the gut, and for good reason. Our body hosts trillions of tiny microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, and viruses) collectively known as the microbiome. Within the microbiome, the microbes that have shown a health benefit to the host are called “probiotics.” While the complete list of benefits of probiotics is ongoing, we know from decades of research that these friendly bacteria aid in everything from digestion and immune function to vaginal health and brain health. Ideally, our microbiome would be in perfect harmony, but factors like traveling, poor diet, antibiotics, or stress can disrupt the balance between good and bad bacteria. This imbalance, known as dysbiosis, can lead to issues such as gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, and a weakened immune system. So, how can we restore balance and promote gut health?

Thanks to the efforts of our dedicated scientists, we now know that we can replenish the good bacteria in our gut by taking high-quality probiotic supplements such as IFF’s HOWARU®.

    The benefits.

While the term “probiotic” lends itself to all beneficial bacteria that have been shown to have a health benefit in at least one human clinical study, not all probiotic strains are the same. Each HOWARU® strain has been carefully selected by expert scientists for its specific health advantages. IFF collaborates with more than 1,000 scientists worldwide to ensure our vision for probiotic strains is driven by microbiome science and clinical research. By understanding the microbiome dynamics in the gut, we can better identify and isolate the probiotic strains that can help us support different facets of our health.

Different strains of probiotics have different benefits. For instance, if you need digestive health support, Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis HN019™ would be an ideal strain. It has been studied in more than 43 clinical trials and published in more than 111 scientific publications. For healthy vaginal microbiota, Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus HN001™ together with Lactobacillus acidophilus La-14 is a trusted choice, having been consumed for more than 20 years in food and supplements and published in about 100 and 50 scientific publications, respectively. Just as you wouldn’t have a chihuahua dog herd sheep, selecting the right strain for the right job is crucial to probiotic success.

All HOWARU® Signature Strains are tested in human clinical trials and undergo rigorous safety screenings and stability testing, taking the guesswork out of choosing the right probiotic product.  Consumers who take probiotic supplements such as those that contain HOWARU® strains can benefit from a science-backed way to provide the health benefits they seek, making for healthier and happier lives.

    Vitamin B2

The biomanufacturing of Vitamin B2 led to the reduction of 75% of fossil raw materials and 50% operating costs, compared to the chemical process. Vitamin B2 is used in the food, feed or healthcare sectors.

    Insulin

Insulin is one of the most widely known biopharmaceutical. Biotechnology revolutionised its manufacturing process and led to the development of new types of insulin through r-DNA technology.

    Detergents

Enzymes and biosurfactancts are alternative ingredients that improve the performance of detergents, while leading to water and energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions and water toxicity.

    Clothes

Clothes made from alternative fibres produced by microorganisms can be 8x stronger than steel, 100% recyclable, biodegradable and replace fossil-fuel based or resource-intensive textiles.

    Algal Omega 3

Algal Omega-3 is an innovative feed product for aquaculture. It reduces the impact on climate change by 30-40% compared to fish oil and saves 60 tons of wild fish for every ton of Algal Omega-3 used.

    Cheese

Cheese is a vegetarian product thanks to biotechnology. Biotechnology is also essential to produce lactose- or cholesterol-free cheese, as well as alternative proteins.
