Prosperity, resilience and leadership for the European Union

A new EU Biotech Act was announced in President von der Leyen's political guidelines for the new commission in July 2024. The Health & Animal Welfare Commissioner, Olivér Várhelyi, was tasked to lead the work in coordination with DG GROW and DG RTD.

EuropaBio welcomes the initiative which builds on the European Commission Communication titled ‘Building the future with nature: Boosting biotechnology and biomanufacturing in the EU’ published by the previous Commission in March 2024. EuropaBio calls for an ambitious cross-sectoral EU Biotech Act, that strengthens Europe as a global biotechnology leader for competitiveness and strategic autonomy.

Follow the journey of the new EU Biotech Act with EuropaBio, its members and associations working together across sectors. This page keeps you informed on the latest developments and resources associated with the EU Biotech Act.

The EU Biotech Act is Europe’s opportunity to create a cornerstone for this strategically critical technology. It is vital that biotech is recognised at a high policy level, and a strong Biotech Act sends a global signal that our innovation and capacity will support healthy citizens, competitive sectors and a sustainable future.
