Slovenia Biotech Hills joins EuropaBio: Elevating Slovenia’s Biotech Ecosystem in Europe

    05/12/2025

    PRESS RELEASE

Brussels, 5 December 2025 – EuropaBio is delighted to welcome Biotech Hills as its newest member, strengthening Slovenia’s voice in the European biotechnology landscape.

Founded in 2024 by leading partners Novartis, Sandoz/Lek, Labena, AmCham Slovenia, and Herman & Partners, Biotech Hills serves as a dynamic business platform dedicated to positioning Slovenia on the global map of biotechnological and pharmaceutical innovation. The institute focuses on building a comprehensive ecosystem that will, with the support of governmental structures and strategic partnerships – currently they have over 30 partners, attract investment, foster development and production, and promote education in biotechnology.

Biotech Hills aims to boost Slovenia’s competitiveness and establish itself as Europe’s number one hub for innovative collaboration. Already engaged with the OECD on the future of biotechnology, the institute seeks to contribute to EU-level initiatives such as the Biotech Act and actively participate in EuropaBio committees and events. Its strong pharmaceutical heritage and growing biotech sector offer valuable insights and opportunities for collaboration across Europe.

By joining EuropaBio, Biotech Hills will share expertise on Slovenia’s biotech and pharmaceutical environment, facilitate knowledge transfer, and provide access to government, research institutions, and universities. The institute is committed to supporting legislative processes and strengthening connections among European biotech ecosystems to enhance competitiveness and strategic autonomy.

Dr Claire Skentelbery, Director General of EuropaBio, commented: “EuropaBio is delighted to welcome the voice of biotech from Slovenia in the form of Biotech Hills Institute. We now represent almost 30 different associations within EuropaBio and together we create the single voice needed in the drive to build biotech as a primary industrial sector.”

Nik Prebil, CEO of Biotech Hills added: “Joining EuropaBio marks an important step for Biotech Hills in strengthening the European biotech ecosystem. Slovenia brings a long and successful history in pharmaceuticals, and with the wave of ongoing investments in biotech, our innovation landscape is gaining momentum. Through this collaboration, we aim to help drive Europe’s scientific and industrial leadership in the years ahead.”

The biomanufacturing of Vitamin B2 led to the reduction of 75% of fossil raw materials and 50% operating costs, compared to the chemical process. Vitamin B2 is used in the food, feed or healthcare sectors.

    Insulin

Insulin is one of the most widely known biopharmaceutical. Biotechnology revolutionised its manufacturing process and led to the development of new types of insulin through r-DNA technology.

    Detergents

Enzymes and biosurfactancts are alternative ingredients that improve the performance of detergents, while leading to water and energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions and water toxicity.

    Clothes

Clothes made from alternative fibres produced by microorganisms can be 8x stronger than steel, 100% recyclable, biodegradable and replace fossil-fuel based or resource-intensive textiles.

    Algal Omega 3

Algal Omega-3 is an innovative feed product for aquaculture. It reduces the impact on climate change by 30-40% compared to fish oil and saves 60 tons of wild fish for every ton of Algal Omega-3 used.

    Cheese

Cheese is a vegetarian product thanks to biotechnology. Biotechnology is also essential to produce lactose- or cholesterol-free cheese, as well as alternative proteins.
