The Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology joins EuropaBio: Advancing Applied Biotechnology in Europe

    29/05/2026

    PRESS RELEASE

Brussels, 29 May 2026 – EuropaBio is pleased to welcome the Biotechnologies Unit of the Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) as its newest member.

LIST is a leading European research centre with 840+ employees driving high-impact innovation across natural, built and industrial environments, supported by a cross-cutting expertise in space, artificial intelligence and defence. Within the innovation ecosystem of the Greater Region, LIST stands out by connecting disciplines, sectors, and levels of technological maturity. This distinctive cross-disciplinary approach transforms research into real-world impact.

By joining EuropaBio, the Biotechnologies Unit at LIST aims to deepen its engagement within the European biotechnology ecosystem, increase the visibility of its research, and foster collaborations that accelerate the translation of scientific advances into sustainable and impactful biotechnological solutions. Membership will also enable LIST to contribute its scientific expertise to EU-level policy discussions, helping to shape regulatory frameworks that support innovation while ensuring safety and sustainability.

As a EuropaBio member, LIST intends to actively participate in collaborative projects and working groups, supporting partnerships between academia, industry, and public stakeholders. Its multidisciplinary approach, combining biotechnology with digital tools such as artificial intelligence and bioinformatics, will contribute to EuropaBio’s work in emerging areas including precision biotechnology and circular bioeconomy solutions.

Dr Claire Skentelbery, Director General of EuropaBio, commented: “It is excellent to welcome LIST to EuropaBio – with double benefits. In addition to its leadership role in translational research, LIST can also represent the Luxembourg ecosystem, as a central organisation within the country.”

Dr Marcelo Fernandez Lahore, Head of Unit – Biotechnologies at LIST, said: “We are pleased to join EuropaBio in advancing efforts to strengthen and grow the biotechnology sector across Europe. Luxembourg has a clear and strategic role to play in driving progress toward a more sustainable biomanufacturing future.”

    Vitamin B2

The biomanufacturing of Vitamin B2 led to the reduction of 75% of fossil raw materials and 50% operating costs, compared to the chemical process. Vitamin B2 is used in the food, feed or healthcare sectors.

    Insulin

Insulin is one of the most widely known biopharmaceutical. Biotechnology revolutionised its manufacturing process and led to the development of new types of insulin through r-DNA technology.

    Detergents

Enzymes and biosurfactancts are alternative ingredients that improve the performance of detergents, while leading to water and energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions and water toxicity.

    Clothes

Clothes made from alternative fibres produced by microorganisms can be 8x stronger than steel, 100% recyclable, biodegradable and replace fossil-fuel based or resource-intensive textiles.

    Algal Omega 3

Algal Omega-3 is an innovative feed product for aquaculture. It reduces the impact on climate change by 30-40% compared to fish oil and saves 60 tons of wild fish for every ton of Algal Omega-3 used.

    Cheese

Cheese is a vegetarian product thanks to biotechnology. Biotechnology is also essential to produce lactose- or cholesterol-free cheese, as well as alternative proteins.
