Biotech recognised in regulation for Europe’s future: EuropaBio welcomes European Parliament’s vote on Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform Regulation

27/02/2024

PRESS RELEASE

 Brussels, 27 February 2024

The European Parliament’s vote on Strategic Technologies for Europe Platform (STEP) represents an important first move to ensure European industry remains competitive and innovative. EuropaBio welcomes the inclusion of biotech according to the OECD definition as a strategic technology for Europe.

The Platform aims to facilitate and incentivise funding for projects in the strategic and innovative fields of digital and deep tech, clean tech and biotechnology. The STEP Regulation includes an added financing of 1.5 billion euros and aims to streamline and make better use of existing funds, through the ‘sovereignty seal’ awarded to projects contributing to STEP objectives, which will facilitate the granting of EU funds and attract additional funding.

Biotechnologies play a key role in the development and production of critical compounds, products, and technologies across multiple sectors. Scaling up investment in biotech and biomanufacturing will significantly contribute to Europe’s green transition and strategic autonomy.

Claire Skentelbery, Director-General of EuropaBio, said “It is vital that biotech is recognised and practically embedded into EU frameworks. Technologies can only make a difference if they are able to be used and Europe needs to create pathways where strategies are linked to the technologies needed for delivery.”

Algal Omega 3

Algal Omega-3 is an innovative feed product for aquaculture. It reduces the impact on climate change by 30-40% compared to fish oil and saves 60 tons of wild fish for every ton of Algal Omega-3 used.

Cheese

Cheese is a vegetarian product thanks to biotechnology. Biotechnology is also essential to produce lactose- or cholesterol-free cheese, as well as alternative proteins.

Clothes

Clothes made from alternative fibres produced by microorganisms can be 8x stronger than steel, 100% recyclable, biodegradable and replace fossil-fuel based or resource-intensive textiles.

Vitamin B2

The biomanufacturing of Vitamin B2 led to the reduction of 75% of fossil raw materials and 50% operating costs, compared to the chemical process. Vitamin B2 is used in the food, feed or healthcare sectors.

Detergents

Enzymes and biosurfactancts are alternative ingredients that improve the performance of detergents, while leading to water and energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions and water toxicity.

Insulin

Insulin is one of the most widely known biopharmaceutical. Biotechnology revolutionised its manufacturing process and led to the development of new types of insulin through r-DNA technology.
