Reward for Innovation

EuropaBio will be organising a dinner event entitled ‘Reward for Innovation’ hosted MEP Lambert van Nistelrooij (EPP) on 15th November from 19:00 - 22:00 as part of the upcoming 8th European Innovation Summit, held at the European Parliament.

Healthcare biotechnology has the possibility to herald revolutionary treatments for patients particularly in disease areas where conventional treatments do not suffice or in areas of unmet medical need. Today, access to such treatments is increasingly threatened by short-term cost containment measures. While creative solutions to solve healthcare budget pressures are needed, austerity policies could have a detrimental impact on innovation and have a lasting impact on the ability to sustain an attractive biotechnology environment in Europe. So the question remains: what can be done to reward innovation without impeding access to medicines for patients?

The European Parliament’s current Own Initiative report on ‘EU options for improving access to medicines’ provides a useful context for this dinner debate. The event will create an opportune platform for an open, multi-stakeholder discussion in order to identify the potential for EU-level action and further cooperation in the current challenging environment, more specifically in relation to access to medicines.
