Feedstock: The building blocks of EU’s sustainability and resilience
NEWS
Brussels, 15 October 2024 - Feedstock is essential to any industrial activity. The concept of (bio)manufacturing implies the transformation of raw material into a product. Nonetheless, there is a wide range of existing and potential feedstocks, and it is important to explore the topic in the context of the ongoing EU’s Green Transition and the bioeconomy.
This two-page informative paper aims to provide a snapshot on the topic of feedstock for biomanufacturing. It explores different sustainable carbon sources such as bio-based, recycled carbon and captured carbon and presents examples of existing value-chains across different sectors, such as chemical, health or food. Additionally, current challenges and opportunities are highlighted and the need for a future-proof and fit-for-purpose governance model and policy framework throughout supply-chains emphasised.
In the future, EuropaBio will further address the topic of feedstock with a sectorial specific approach and more in-depth examples to showcase how feedstock and biotechnology are important to the transformation of traditional industrial ecosystems. Furthermore, they will highlight the contribution of biotechnology to a more sustainable, healthier and resilient Europe and to secure a globally competitive economy.
