Hawkwood Biotech joins EuropaBio: Supporting Industrial Biotech with their Critical Challenges

25/06/2025

PRESS RELEASE

Brussels,  25 June 2025 - EuropaBio is proud to announce that Hawkwood Biotech has joined the association.

Founded in 2017, Hawkwood Biotech is the biggest consulting firm dedicated to industrial biotechnology. The firm advises clients across the bioeconomy, including start-ups, corporates, investors, governments, think-tanks, and research institutions on critical technical and commercial decisions from early R&D through scale-up, manufacturing, market entry, investment, and beyond.

Hawkwood’s global team includes a dozen core consultants and a council of more than 35 specialists chosen for their knowledge and experience in their fields. Collectively, the team brings over 1,000 years of industrial biotech experience spanning process development, techno-economic analysis, partnerships, and commercialization across sectors such as food and animal nutrition, agriculture, materials, fuels, and specialty chemicals.

Hawkwood is committed to enabling a more sustainable and resilient bioeconomy worldwide. In joining EuropaBio, the firm hopes to contribute its real-world expertise in industrial biotech to a dynamic European network working to shape favourable legislative, regulatory, and economic frameworks for biomanufacturing and biotechnology.

Dr. Claire Skentelbery, Director General of EuropaBio commented: “We are delighted to welcome The Hawkwood team to EuropaBio and their insights into the international business of biotechnology will be a valuable addition to our advocacy for a strong Europe within strong global supply”.

Richard Kenny, Co-Founder and Managing Partner at Hawkwood Biotech added “Hawkwood was founded to help members of the current generation of industrial biotech companies learn from the glories and disasters of the last. For almost a decade we’ve been propelling the bioeconomy forward by helping startups with their scaling challenges, investors make better investment decisions, and established corporations develop, refine and implement bio-strategies. EuropaBio’s remit is perfectly aligned with Hawkwood’s principles and we look forward to contributing to the collaboration they have fostered and to the European ecosystem more broadly in the coming years.”

Algal Omega 3

Algal Omega-3 is an innovative feed product for aquaculture. It reduces the impact on climate change by 30-40% compared to fish oil and saves 60 tons of wild fish for every ton of Algal Omega-3 used.

Cheese

Cheese is a vegetarian product thanks to biotechnology. Biotechnology is also essential to produce lactose- or cholesterol-free cheese, as well as alternative proteins.

Clothes

Clothes made from alternative fibres produced by microorganisms can be 8x stronger than steel, 100% recyclable, biodegradable and replace fossil-fuel based or resource-intensive textiles.

Vitamin B2

The biomanufacturing of Vitamin B2 led to the reduction of 75% of fossil raw materials and 50% operating costs, compared to the chemical process. Vitamin B2 is used in the food, feed or healthcare sectors.

Detergents

Enzymes and biosurfactancts are alternative ingredients that improve the performance of detergents, while leading to water and energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions and water toxicity.

Insulin

Insulin is one of the most widely known biopharmaceutical. Biotechnology revolutionised its manufacturing process and led to the development of new types of insulin through r-DNA technology.
