LALSTOP G46 WG – Dependable Pathogen Control for Farmers

    18/09/2024

    CASE STUDY

    Submission from Lallemand

    The innovation.

LALSTOP G46 WG is an innovative crop protection product based on a living ascomycete fungus known as Clonostachys rosea strain J1446.  This naturally occurring organism and strain J1446 was originally isolated from Finnish soil in 1993 as part of a project to control cereal seed pathogens like Fusarium, Rhizoctonia and Pythium. LALSTOP G46 WG has a range of modes of action in that it: 1) outcompetes pathogenic organisms for space and nutrients on plant surfaces and around roots (competition), and 2) attacks and feeds on key pathogens to reduce their potential to infect plants and cause disease (hyper-parasitism).

    The benefits.

After years of research, Lallemand has demonstrated formidable effectiveness of LALSTOP G46 WG against major crop diseases such as Botrytis cinerea and Powdery Mildews, which cause significant economic losses for farmers growing fruit, wine grapes, vegetables, herbs and ornamental crops. The expertise we have acquired on this fungus means that we are now able to make very precise recommendations for its use, considering factors such as climatic conditions, periods of use, crops sensitivity to the disease, volume of water to apply, and of course dose rate linked to the crops stages. To support global registration processes, data has been developed to prove LALSTOP G46 WG is safe to humans (workers & handlers, growers, consumers) and the environment (beneficial insects, bees, aquatic species, birds, wildlife). This ensures farmers can use the product without risk to human health or the environment, while effectively controlling target pathogens.

Use of LALSTOP G46 WG allows farmers to reduce their reliance on chemical applications within IPM (Integration Pest Management) programs. This not only helps maintain the long-term effectiveness of these chemicals by reducing pathogen resistance, but also results in less residue in harvested produce. The fungal strain in LALSTOP G46 WG is officially listed as a tool for resistance management with the internally recognized Fungicide Resistance Action Committee (FRAC) and is compatible with both IPM and organic growing programs.  In addition, the product LALSTOP G46 WG is listed with organic production certifiers globally as available for use in the production of organic agriculture. It is registered and commercially marketed in the following countries as a “low risk” pesticide:  Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Ecuador, France, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, United States of America, Uruguay and is pending approval in Argentina, Chile, and South Africa.

    Vitamin B2

The biomanufacturing of Vitamin B2 led to the reduction of 75% of fossil raw materials and 50% operating costs, compared to the chemical process. Vitamin B2 is used in the food, feed or healthcare sectors.

    Insulin

Insulin is one of the most widely known biopharmaceutical. Biotechnology revolutionised its manufacturing process and led to the development of new types of insulin through r-DNA technology.

    Detergents

Enzymes and biosurfactancts are alternative ingredients that improve the performance of detergents, while leading to water and energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions and water toxicity.

    Clothes

Clothes made from alternative fibres produced by microorganisms can be 8x stronger than steel, 100% recyclable, biodegradable and replace fossil-fuel based or resource-intensive textiles.

    Algal Omega 3

Algal Omega-3 is an innovative feed product for aquaculture. It reduces the impact on climate change by 30-40% compared to fish oil and saves 60 tons of wild fish for every ton of Algal Omega-3 used.

    Cheese

Cheese is a vegetarian product thanks to biotechnology. Biotechnology is also essential to produce lactose- or cholesterol-free cheese, as well as alternative proteins.
