Microorganisms as a factory and as a product
INFOGRAPHIC
Microorganisms and fermentation processes play a vital role in producing many everyday products that we consume, including beer and sweets.
Fermentation is a process that happens by feeding microorganisms in contained spaces - bioreactors - with biomass, like agricultural crops, animal and forestry residues. Through this process, microorganisms can transform the biomass into different products, such as alcohol or lactic acid. These chemical components are key for the manufacturing of consumer products, such as food ingredients and feed additives.
The application of biomass fermentation, however, is not limited to the food sector. Final products include microbial pesticides and fertilizers, vaccines, cosmetics and cleaning products.
