Pivot Bio joins EuropaBio: Advancing Innovation in Sustainable Agriculture

    03/04/2026

    PRESS RELEASE

Brussels, 3 April 2026 – EuropaBio is pleased to welcome Pivot Bio as its newest member, further strengthening the association’s representation of innovative biotechnology solutions supporting sustainable agriculture.

Founded in 2011, Pivot Bio is a leading agricultural biotechnology company developing microbial nitrogen solutions for major crops including corn, silage, sorghum, wheat, and cotton. Produced through fermentation, Pivot Bio’s proprietary microbes colonize plant roots and enable crops to fix nitrogen directly from the air, improving nutrient use efficiency, increasing yields, and reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers.

As the pioneer in microbial crop nutrition, Pivot Bio represents a new generation of ag-tech innovation designed to offer farmers increase productivity while lowering environmental impacts. The company’s technology has strong potential to support European priorities around sustainable agriculture, emissions reduction, and fertilizer resilience.

By joining EuropaBio, Pivot Bio aims to engage with the European biotechnology community, follow evolving regulatory and policy developments, and support its long-term plans for global expansion. The company also intends to actively contribute to EuropaBio’s councils and working platforms, sharing scientific, regulatory, and R&D expertise to inform constructive dialogue between industry, policymakers, and the scientific community.

Dr Claire Skentelbery, Director General of EuropaBio, commented: “Pivot Bio is an exceptional example of what biotechnology can achieve for society and resilience of supply in agri-food, when we are reminded daily of the fragility and risks from conventional platforms. It helps farmers own their own crop inputs with reduced supply chain costs and shocks – all of which serve national food supply and trade strengths”.

Chris Abbott, Chief Executive Officer at Pivot Bio, said: “At Pivot Bio, our mission is to give farmers the nitrogen-fixing technology solutions that improve productivity while reducing environmental impact and reducing farmers’ input costs. Europe’s strong support for new technology and innovation makes it an exciting place for us to continue advancing agricultural solutions. By joining EuropaBio, we’re looking forward to collaborating with the European biotech community to bring innovative and sustainable microbial solutions to farmers in the EU. We’ve seen how unleashing innovative technology agriculture can create real, lasting value for growers around the world. We’re excited to deepen our partnerships across the EU to drive innovation, and to support farmers build a more resilient and sustainable food system.”

    Vitamin B2

The biomanufacturing of Vitamin B2 led to the reduction of 75% of fossil raw materials and 50% operating costs, compared to the chemical process. Vitamin B2 is used in the food, feed or healthcare sectors.

    Insulin

Insulin is one of the most widely known biopharmaceutical. Biotechnology revolutionised its manufacturing process and led to the development of new types of insulin through r-DNA technology.

    Detergents

Enzymes and biosurfactancts are alternative ingredients that improve the performance of detergents, while leading to water and energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions and water toxicity.

    Clothes

Clothes made from alternative fibres produced by microorganisms can be 8x stronger than steel, 100% recyclable, biodegradable and replace fossil-fuel based or resource-intensive textiles.

    Algal Omega 3

Algal Omega-3 is an innovative feed product for aquaculture. It reduces the impact on climate change by 30-40% compared to fish oil and saves 60 tons of wild fish for every ton of Algal Omega-3 used.

    Cheese

Cheese is a vegetarian product thanks to biotechnology. Biotechnology is also essential to produce lactose- or cholesterol-free cheese, as well as alternative proteins.
