Policy Proposal for New Genomic Techniques – Joint Letter to EU Vice-President Frans Timmermans and EU Commissioners Stella Kyriakides and Janusz Wojciechowski

10/05/2023

NEWS RELEASE

Brussels, 10 May 2023 - EuropaBio, together with 20 agri-food value chain associations, co-signed a joint letter to the European Commission, reiterating their support of the Commission’s plans for a legislative proposal on plants obtained by New Genomic Techniques (NGTs) and call for an enabling and proportionate regulatory framework.

The letter addresses and highlights relevant points linked to transparency and freedom of choice; detection and identification for market control and consumer trust; coexistence of farming systems and international trade; and correct use of democratic instruments.

It also encourages the Commission to “promptly initiate discussions with the relevant stakeholders, notably the livestock and fermentation sectors, on the review of the regulatory approach in other sectors, in the EU and on a global level.”
