PRESS RELEASE

SenseUp joins EuropaBio: leveraging the power of biotech for sustainable and commercially viable solutions

Brussels, 13 December 2022 – EuropaBio is pleased to announce that the German natural evolution company SenseUp has joined as an associate member.

After starting as a spin-off from the Institute for Biotechnology at Forschungszentrum Jülich and undertaking years of systematic technology development, SenseUp is now working with global players from the feed, food and pharmaceutical industries to develop superior biotechnological production processes.

Using their novel natural evolution technology, SenseUp has developed powerful and universal production platforms for proteins and peptides, as well as RNA. These platforms are quickly adaptable to a huge number of individual products for different applications and markets, such as pharma, food, and crop science. Leveraging their technology beyond their core protein and peptide focus, they have recently launched a highly innovative exploratory RNA program addressing animal health and crop protection.

EuropaBio Director-General Dr. Claire Skentelbery commented: “We are proud to have such an innovative SME onboard. We look forward to working together for the development and success of the European biotechnology sector”.

Dr. Georg Schaumann, CEO and Founder at SenseUp, added: “We are very excited to join such a high-profile and influential industry group. It will be of great value in the context of our innovative RNA program, which aims to deliver sustainable, affordable, and scalable bio-tech solutions across a variety of industrial sectors”.

Algal Omega 3

Algal Omega-3 is an innovative feed product for aquaculture. It reduces the impact on climate change by 30-40% compared to fish oil and saves 60 tons of wild fish for every ton of Algal Omega-3 used.

Cheese

Cheese is a vegetarian product thanks to biotechnology. Biotechnology is also essential to produce lactose- or cholesterol-free cheese, as well as alternative proteins.

Clothes

Clothes made from alternative fibres produced by microorganisms can be 8x stronger than steel, 100% recyclable, biodegradable and replace fossil-fuel based or resource-intensive textiles.

Vitamin B2

The biomanufacturing of Vitamin B2 led to the reduction of 75% of fossil raw materials and 50% operating costs, compared to the chemical process. Vitamin B2 is used in the food, feed or healthcare sectors.

Detergents

Enzymes and biosurfactancts are alternative ingredients that improve the performance of detergents, while leading to water and energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions and water toxicity.

Insulin

Insulin is one of the most widely known biopharmaceutical. Biotechnology revolutionised its manufacturing process and led to the development of new types of insulin through r-DNA technology.
