ShakeUp Factory joins EuropaBio: Championing EU Agri-foodtech Pioneers

    16/12/2024

    PRESS RELEASE

Brussels, 16 December 2024 - EuropaBio is delighted to announce that ShakeUp Factory, a Paris-based organisation dedicated to accelerating European agri-foodtech innovation, has joined its membership.

Founded in 2015, ShakeUp Factory is dedicated to supporting agri-foodtech champions through strategic synergies between startups, corporations, research organisations, investors, and other key stakeholders. Recognising biotechnologies as the future frontier of food innovation, Shakeup Factory is a leading accelerator supporting European pioneers in this space. Through collaborations, open innovation, and synergy-building initiatives, Shakeup Factory fosters a unique ecosystem of 500+ European agrifood actors to create the most scalable, sustainable, and impactful food solutions.

Shakeup Factory has already laid the groundwork for this vision, recently initiating an EIT Food-supported ecosystem to establish key recommendations and actionable roadmaps that will drive the growth of biotech applications in food. As a EuropaBio member, Shakeup Factory is committed to bringing thought leadership, influential partnerships, R&D expertise, industrialisation capabilities, and entrepreneurial support to contribute to EuropaBio's objectives and to elevate Europe as a global hub for biotech food innovation.

“ShakeUp Factory represents the ambition and potential of Europe to achieve global innovation and resilience for supply chains and sustainable agri-food production. Benefits will be felt by all, from farmers through to consumers and enable Europe to continue its world-leading stance of healthy and accessible food from a diverse industrial value chain.” says Dr. Claire Skentelbery, Director General of EuropaBio.

Kevin Camphuis, CoFounder of ShakeUp Factory adds ‘’We’re thrilled to join and build on such a strong and recognized organization as EuropaBio as we share the same ambition to accelerate the deployment of biotechnologies to food and agriculture, a still nascent but so promising matter with geostrategic opportunities to seize for Europe’’.

The biomanufacturing of Vitamin B2 led to the reduction of 75% of fossil raw materials and 50% operating costs, compared to the chemical process. Vitamin B2 is used in the food, feed or healthcare sectors.

    Insulin

Insulin is one of the most widely known biopharmaceutical. Biotechnology revolutionised its manufacturing process and led to the development of new types of insulin through r-DNA technology.

    Detergents

Enzymes and biosurfactancts are alternative ingredients that improve the performance of detergents, while leading to water and energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions and water toxicity.

    Clothes

Clothes made from alternative fibres produced by microorganisms can be 8x stronger than steel, 100% recyclable, biodegradable and replace fossil-fuel based or resource-intensive textiles.

    Algal Omega 3

Algal Omega-3 is an innovative feed product for aquaculture. It reduces the impact on climate change by 30-40% compared to fish oil and saves 60 tons of wild fish for every ton of Algal Omega-3 used.
