Wojciech Nowak, Novartis, appointed as new Chair of EuropaBio’s Healthcare Council

NEWS RELEASE

Brussels, 16 November 2023 - EuropaBio is pleased to announce the appointment of Wojciech Nowak as the new Chair of its Healthcare Council. Mr. Nowak, currently serving as the Group Senior Director Global Governmental & Public Affairs at Novartis, has been elected by the council members and will assume the role of interim Chair until his official 2-year term commences in June 2024.

Commenting on his appointment as Chair of the Healthcare Council, Wojciech Nowak said: “I am very pleased to take the role of Chair of the EuropaBio Healthcare Council, in this pivotal moment. I am looking forward to supporting the biotechnology industry in Europe to continue to be a leader in innovation, and to strengthen its life science sector. Let’s work together to establish an environment where innovation can flourish, and patients across Europe can access the medicines they need, when they need them.”

Dr. Claire Skentelbery, Director General of EuropaBio added: “We are delighted to announce the appointment of Wojciech Nowak as the Chair of EuropaBio's Healthcare Council. Wojciech has a wealth of experience with Novartis, and a passion for the ecosystem in which Europe's biotechnology can flourish. He will play a key role in steering the Healthcare Council towards impactful initiatives at this most critical time for innovation within Europe's long-term ambitions. Algal Omega 3

Algal Omega-3 is an innovative feed product for aquaculture. It reduces the impact on climate change by 30-40% compared to fish oil and saves 60 tons of wild fish for every ton of Algal Omega-3 used.

Cheese

Cheese is a vegetarian product thanks to biotechnology. Biotechnology is also essential to produce lactose- or cholesterol-free cheese, as well as alternative proteins.

Clothes

Clothes made from alternative fibres produced by microorganisms can be 8x stronger than steel, 100% recyclable, biodegradable and replace fossil-fuel based or resource-intensive textiles.

Vitamin B2

The biomanufacturing of Vitamin B2 led to the reduction of 75% of fossil raw materials and 50% operating costs, compared to the chemical process. Vitamin B2 is used in the food, feed or healthcare sectors.

Enzymes and biosurfactancts are alternative ingredients that improve the performance of detergents, while leading to water and energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions and water toxicity.

Insulin is one of the most widely known biopharmaceutical. Biotechnology revolutionised its manufacturing process and led to the development of new types of insulin through r-DNA technology.
