Kaffe Bueno joins EuropaBio: unlocking coffee’s therapeutic and industrial potential

    PRESS RELEASE

Kaffe Bueno joins EuropaBio: unlocking coffee’s therapeutic and industrial potential

Brussels, 05 May 2021 – EuropaBio is pleased to announce that Kaffe Bueno has joined as a corporate member. The company was originally a runner up in the SME Award, winning a free period of EuropaBio Membership and in 2021 has converted that into Corporate Membership.

Established in 2016, Kaffe Bueno is a Danish company which employs green chemistry and biotechnology to upcycle coffee's post-consumption by-product into active and functional ingredients for cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and functional foods.

Kaffe Bueno’s vision is to transform the way people perceive coffee: “from looking at it as a tool to make it until the end of the day, to look at it as a magical bean with the potential of improving human health by using what lies inside it”.

EuropaBio Director-General Dr. Claire Skentelbery says “Kaffe Bueno represents how European industry can build economic and societal benefits and serve a circular economy at the same time. Coffee is everywhere and its potential is only partly fulfilled. We look forward to working with Kaffe Bueno to ensure that the company and its products have an impact across sectors.”

Kaffe Bueno’s Co-Founder and CEO, Juan Medina, added “Following the 2018 SME Award, where we were runner-up, we have been actively participating within the EuropaBio network and using varied resources to support our development. We look forward to our continued participation in EuropaBio, helping shape and improve the bioeconomy and biotechnology landscape from a growing SME perspective”.

    Vitamin B2

The biomanufacturing of Vitamin B2 led to the reduction of 75% of fossil raw materials and 50% operating costs, compared to the chemical process. Vitamin B2 is used in the food, feed or healthcare sectors.

    Insulin

Insulin is one of the most widely known biopharmaceutical. Biotechnology revolutionised its manufacturing process and led to the development of new types of insulin through r-DNA technology.

    Detergents

Enzymes and biosurfactancts are alternative ingredients that improve the performance of detergents, while leading to water and energy savings and reductions in CO2 emissions and water toxicity.

    Clothes

Clothes made from alternative fibres produced by microorganisms can be 8x stronger than steel, 100% recyclable, biodegradable and replace fossil-fuel based or resource-intensive textiles.

    Algal Omega 3

Algal Omega-3 is an innovative feed product for aquaculture. It reduces the impact on climate change by 30-40% compared to fish oil and saves 60 tons of wild fish for every ton of Algal Omega-3 used.

    Cheese

Cheese is a vegetarian product thanks to biotechnology. Biotechnology is also essential to produce lactose- or cholesterol-free cheese, as well as alternative proteins.
